PDP's 'strongman' cornered, won't be mantri again | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, May 23: Chances of returning of a former minister and a powerful PDP leader to the council of ministers in the present regime continue to remain bleak despite the speculations that he may be accorded tourism portfolio. The PDP leader was dropped from the council of ministers on April 4- when Mehbooba assumed post of the chief minister with the re-launch of PDP-BJP bonhomie. The former B minister was then accused of being part of the parleys with the BJP for the government formation during the stalemate period that too Mehbooba had adopted stern stand for the JK specific CBMs. The businessman turned politician later admitted that he wanted the people of the state not to witness midterm polls as only a year had passed since people had exercised their franchise. Though the PDP leader had hailed Mehbooba's elevation as state's chief minister, his relation with the latter continue to remain fuzzy. Meanwhile, the PDP leader was spotted accompanying Mehbooba at a public function in Srinagar a few days back, speculations were rife that he would most likely be taken back in the cabinet and that he will be accorded vital tourism portfolio. According to party insiders, the PDP minister while expressing reluctance in accepting the tourism ministry wanted his portfolio back in his kitty. Meanwhile, sources told Early Times that there are meagre chances of the PDP leader being given any ministry in near future as he has expressed no mood to accept the same. Sources said his relation with the chief minister Mehbooab Mufti continues to remain under the cloud and that chances of both working together are unlikely. During the recent board meeting held for Srinagar which was chaired by the chief minister witnessed some troubled moments with the PDP MLA coming to forefront and criticising government's policies. Accusing the present regime of allowing corrupt to go scot-free, the MLA had raised concern over the rampant illegal constructions in Srinagar with helmsmen doing nothing to put lid over such lawlessness. "When you were the minister, it was you who said what has been constructed cannot be bulldozed. Now it is you who is speaking a different language," chief minister as per insiders told the PDP MLA. It was after the meeting that PDP MLA issued a separate statement from his own media cell in which he mentioned the demands that were put forth by him in the district board meeting. Pertinently, the newspapers received that statement not from the PDP's media cell but from the PDP leader himself. Though, in the handout, he had hailed Mehbooba's concern for Srinagar, yet he made a subtle mention of the things from which Srinagar has been ignored. Furthermore, party insiders believe that his comeback continues to remain unlikely as of now due to him being so vocal against the government. |
