Separatists miffed at Geelani's 'monopoly' | Hurriyat G spokesman eats humble pie | |
Early Times Report
Srinagar, June 24: Ahead of any formal unity among the separatist camps, internal bickering has again erupted as pro-Pakistan hawk Syed Ali Geelani wants to enforce his "one man" rule in the separatist camp here. Sources said at a time when senior separatist leaders including Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik have often been calling on Geelani to forge unity, the old man is resorting to tactics, which project him as the sole leader whereas role of others gets shadowed. Sources said a fresh controversy has erupted over Geelani's statement issued on June 22 whereby he "appealed the people of Kashmir to observe the 1st July, the last Friday of the holy month of Ramadan as 'Youm-ul-Qudus' and 24 June as 'Youm-e-Kashmir' (Kashmir Day)." In a statement Geelani said "peace will elude the world until the Kashmir and Palestine issues are settled according to the wishes and aspirations of the people of these disputed regions." Geelani also appealed the "Tehreek-e-Hurriyat and Hurriyat Conference leaders, Islamic Scholars and Imams of the Masajids to highlight the issue of Masjid Al-Aqsa which is under the illegal and forced occupation of Jewish forces in their Jumma-tul-vida sermons and organize special prayers for the peaceful resolution of all the disputed territories including Palestine and Kashmir which are under the foreign occupation." But his unilateral decision to issue a statement has miffed the other separatist leaders who said the handout had to be issued jointly by all including Hurriyat M and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front. "But he again solely wants to cash even the joint efforts," said a Hurriyat insider. Sources said as the rival camps of Hurriyat took a serious note of the "monopoly efforts", Hurriyat G was left with no option but to issue a formal clarification wherein the spokesman ate humble pie. In a bid to diffuse the tension, Hurriyat G spokesman Ayaz Akbar, had to own the "mistake." In a fresh handout, Hurriyat (G) clarified that the "call regarding observing July 01 as ;Youm-ul-Qudus' and June 24 as 'Youm-e-Kashmir' (Kashmir Day) is a joint program of Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik and by mistake only Geelani's name appeared in the previous handout of the conglomerate." In a statement issued here, Hurriyat (G) spokesman Ayaz Akbar said, "I am solely responsible for this mistake and I apologize for it. The Hurriyat (G) statement reads that all the three leaders appealed the people to remember all the martyrs of Kashmir on the Jumat-ul-wida (Youm-ul-Qudus) and organize special prayers for the liberation of Kashmir and Palestine."
