Finally, babus vacate posh Cheshmashahi huts | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, June 24: After incurring losses in crores to the state exchequer, the bureaucrats in Jammu and Kashmir have finally vacated the posh Cheshmashahi huts, losing comfort, cool and heydays all of a sudden. For past twenty years, no less than 48 posh huts located on the foothills of Zabarawan mountain range at Chesmashahi, were allocated as official residences to who's who of state bureaucracy during the period of bi-annual Durbar Move. The losses incurred to the public money due to the bureaucrats occupying the prime locations was in crores of rupees but there has been no move from the concerned department over how to get that money back. Sources within the government revealed to Early Times that if these huts would have been used as tourist accommodations, the state would have earned crores but the then government preferred Babus over the people and accorded these world famous locations to bureaucrats. The normal tariff that was fixed by the company of Cheshmashahi Huts for three double bed room huts was Rs 10,000 but the tariff paid by the Estate department was Rs 1800 per day. The rent of two double bed room huts was fixed company is Rs 8000 but Estate Department paid Rs 1450 and for one bed room huts company's rent was Rs 6000 and it used to charge mere Rs 1200 from the estates department. The accommodation of JKTDC at TRC Srinagar and Hotel Heemal for two bed rooms is Rs 3500 and while as the estates was giving Rs 1450 as rent and Hotel Lalarukh's rent has been fixed as Rs 2800 but used to get meagre Rs 900. There was a variation of between Rs 1900 and Rs 8200 per room/ hut for single day in the normal tariff and the tariff of the Estates Department. The JKTDC was persistently requesting the Government to vacate the huts or alternatively raise the tariffs but no action was taken by the previous regime into the issue. Moreover the Committee on Public Undertakings had directed the Company to get the accommodation at Cheshmashahi vacated in a phased manner within a period of six months in the year 2013. However, no action was initiated by the Company and by the government on the directions of the Committee and the accommodations continued to remain under the occupation of State bureaucracy till 2016. However, after the directions of the chief minister, these huts have now been made available for the tourist accommodations with government hopeful that such prized locations would attract more tourists towards the picturesque spot. |
