7 militants killed in 24 hours in Kupwara | "Heavily armed militants desperate for infiltration" | | S Tahir-ul Haq Early Times Report
KUPWARA, June 24: In three separate encounters, seven militants were killed in 24 hours since yesterday, in Kupwara district of north Kashmir. According to senior police officer, fresh encounter broke out today morning in Petha Wadar forest area of Handwara tehsil of Kupwara district. "A search operation was launched by a joint team of police and army after receiving specific inputs about the presence of militants in the area. The hiding militants fired upon them, triggering an encounter in which the militant was killed, the official told Early Times. The official said that, "an unidentified militant was killed today in a gun battle with security forces in Wader forest area, taking death toll of militant's to seventh in encounters in this district since Thursday morning. The operation was on when reports last came in, adding that today's encounter is the third in Kupwara district since yesterday in which a total of seven militants have been killed so far, the top rank official said. However sources said that, yesterday three suspected militants were killed in an encounter in Dobwan forests of Lolab area of the district. Another gunfight raged late Thursday evening in Waterkhani forests of Drugmulla area of the district, in which three militants were killed by the security forces, said sources. If sources are to be believed that after the arrest of Lashkar-e Toiba (LeT) militant Abu Ukasah alias Hanzullah by police at Sogam market when he was busy in purchasing some edible items, seven militants were killed in 24 hours in Kupwara district only. Early times have learnt from some army officials that, "infiltration has increased abruptly during the ongoing month, more or less 30 infiltration bids were made by foreign militants that were foiled by the vigilant soldiers near LoCs. The official said that there are various launching pads across the Line of Control (LOC) and heavily armed militants are desperate for infiltration in the district. The killed militants are fresh infiltrators and they belong to mostly Lashkre- Toiba militant outfit, the official added. Meanwhile army has recovered huge quantity of arms and ammunition including GPS and maps from killed militants from different encounters.
