Mafia in Railway Police controls illegal works | | | A B Sharma Early Times Report Katra, June 24: Astonishing it may sound, but for the factual ground reality at the base camp of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi, Katra, the things are very disturbing on the holy land. The Government of India envisioned a yeoman's commitment to commission a railway route to the holy town and despite all odds, it does the herculean job and gave the holy town an expanding station with all state of art facilities to the pilgrims reaching the town for the holy darshan of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi . But the lewd part of the grandeur is that government itself has become the smutty character in the process and has started showing the moral fiber that has given a bad name to the town. The government railway police (GRP) posted at Railway Station Katra has made the area its forte and has also turned the entire set up as a contractual business hub , while holding the reins itself. The Katra vendors who had already suffered with focus of pilgrims shifting to the railway station that has bereft them of their once heavy sales allege that GRP has taken the control of the railway station working as a mafia there and allowing only those people to install their kiosks there who grease the palms of the officials of the GRP. " We are allowed space on the platform only if we give them (GRP) daily allowances as they say they have to hire the booty among the hierarchical line of their officers ," said Ram Prasad of Uttar Pradesh and an eatables seller at Railway platform Katra. The people also allege that the goondaism of GRP is so strong that a constable namely Mohammad Aslam of GRP has taken the entire control of distributing the tatkal tickets after taking extra bucks from the needy. When Early Times reporter talked to one of the ticket clerk on the window, the latter said that since they have to release the tickets on the basis of forms received on window by anyone and cannot check the nexus. Such hooliganism let loose by Government Railway Police officials at at Katra railway station is sending a wrong message across the nation where pilgrims find themselves cheated as well looted at 'Mata ke Darbar'. A local police officer on the condition of anonymity said that state police have no provision to look into such illegal activity as GRP comes under the direct purview of government of India and hence no checks could be made, he said Given such situation, the locals of Katra as well as pilgrims voiced the concern unanimously saying that if such condition remained prevailing in the town, the day is not far off when pilgrims to Katra would stop spending lavishly which would lead to the death of already squeezed tourism business in the state. |
