Govt bans on import of polythene into state from Lakanpur | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar June 24: The Government of Jammu and Kashmir today announced implementation of ban on import of polythene into the state at Lakhanpur and its use in tourist places with immediate effect. Earlier speaking in support of resolution, MLA Ramnagar R S Pathania said the plastic shopping bags are associated with a very high cost to the environment and also negatively affects human health and thus many cities and countries from around the world have already put plastic bag bans in place. "The problem here is that despite having laws we have failed to implement them," said MLA Ramnagar while adding that the plastic bags below 40 microns are banned and are speckled all over. "Every day, 15,000 tonnes of plastic waste is generated in the country. Only 9000 tonnes get collected, he said to substantiate his words and further added henceforth we have plastic heaps all over which will remain there years together." He said that the severity of the problem can be gauged from the fact that as per some reports on an average every cow or buffalo which dies in India has at least 30 kg of plastic in its stomach". Speaking on this occasion, concerned Minister for Forests, Ecology and Environment said on the floor of the Lower House that polythene would not be allowed into the state at Lakhanpur, - Jammu. "From today, polythene transportation/entry into the state is banned," the minister said. He said that the use of polythene at tourist places also stays banned. "We won't allow our state's environment to be engulfed by the polythene menace," the minister said. |
