Union Home Ministry wants revisit stand on Sainik Colony in Srinagar | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, June 24: The Central government has decided to ask the state government to revisit its stand against setting up of sainik colonies in the Kashmir. The Home Minister Rajnath Singh had a detailed discussion on this issue in a meeting which was attended by top brass of the home ministry and officials of the intelligence agencies . The Union Home Minister came up with the view that opposing Sainik Colonies even when it was being set up for the ex-service men and serving officials of the state and not the outsider doesn't send out a positive message about the state and also about the party which is in alliance in the state and also governing the Centre with absolute majority. "The opposition to colonies for army personnel and that too of the state is unacceptable. Army is not an occupational force and secondly the outsiders from the state are not being settled then why this opposition. Shelving out the plan, which was given momentum by the Governor, sends the signal that BJP is succumbing under separatists pressure and this can't be accepted," were the views expressed by the home ministers, said the sources. The meeting also discussed the ways on how to take the process forward for setting up Sainik Colonies as theyare already there in the Jammu region. The sources said the meeting also held the view that since J&K is a one state and then two set of rules can't be accepted. "There can't be two set of rules in one state especially when the opposition smacks of religious and regional connotations. If the people of the Kashmir can get settled down in droves and live a comforatable life then why the opposition for small number of families. The opposition has dangerous connotations and comes in the backdrop of opposition to separate colonies for the KPs, it has to be set straight," said the official. Governor had in April 2015 had approved establishment of a Sainik colony in Srinagar and the proposal was sent to then CM Mufti Muhammad, the idea of setting up Sainik colonies in Srinagar was mooted by BJP's Rajya Sabha member Tarun Vijay.
