Token system for Amarnath pilgrims draws flake
7/5/2016 11:14:17 PM
Early Times Report

JAMMU, July 5: Introducing new token system for registration of Amarnath yatris has drawn a flake from various religious and social organisations as well as yatris reaching here from different parts of country.
Though State Government claims that the token system introduced by it will help yatris in getting hassle free registration, same is termed as a ploy to harass the pilgrims by the social and religious organisations.
The Government further claims that the decision was taken in the interest of yatris as there were many complaints from various religious and social organisations all over the country earlier that yatris were subjected to humiliation and harassment during the on spot registration in Jammu.
However this decision was outrightly rejected by the social and religious organisations as well as yatris who alleged that this way the yatris are unnecessarily asked to stay here for three to four days and many of them can't afford to stay here for such a long period .
The Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Front president Satish Poonchi while criticising the decision said that every year Government is creating problems in the way of Amarnath pilgrims. Earlier it was reduction in duration of pilgrimage, now it is the introduction of token system for registration.
"We are facing total harassment at registration centres" said Ramesh Pillay a pilgrim from Central Mumbai who reached here two days back along with a group of 30 pilgrims. He said the group had chartered the tour and as per its planning it had only one night halt at Jammu but now we are asked to stay for four days which is not only impossible but will add to our problems as entire money will get exhausted during our stay at Jammu, he added.
At the registration counters they are facing lots of harassment, he said adding that the pilgrims staying at various community halls and Sabhas suffer a lot due to non availability of proper electricity and water supply, said Ramesh Kumar a social activist from Bhagwati Nagar.
He said that administration also asked pilgrims to leave for pilgrimage after three days of registration adding that such move of administration intended only to annoy pilgrims.
He demanded like previous years the on the spot registration with medical checkup be conducted at Haat near Exhibition Ground so that pilgrimage will be taken out smoothly without harassing pilgrims.
He also asked district administration to ensure 24 hours power supply, water supply, cleanliness, security and sanitation at the places of stay of the Yatris.
