Mehbooba needs centre's support to come out of difficult situation
7/11/2016 9:52:34 PM
Chief Minister,Mehbooba Mufti,is faced with a very difficult situation following the clashes between protesters, waiting over the killing of Burhan Wani, regional commander of Hizbul Mujahideen, and security forces in which, during the last two days over 21 people have been killed and over 300 civilians including scores of security and police personnel were injured.Well Omar Abdullah, when he headed a coalition Government in alliance with the Congress,he had faced a situation similar to the one being faced by Mehbooba but after two years. He took over as Chief Minister in 2008 and the clashes took places between the security forces and the prot esters who were protesting against the killing of innocent boys. These clashes lasted for about five months in which 120 people were killed. However, the Congress, especially its vicepresident,Rahul Gandhi, supported Omar to the hilt with the result he completed six years in office. But the summer turmoil of 2010 caused sever erosion in the vote of the National Conference with the result it could win just 15 seats in the 2014 Assembly poll.
The current turmoil in Kashmir over the killing of Hizb poster boy,Burhan Wani, may pose fresh challenges for Mehbooba. She may be able to surive as Chief Minister only in case the BJP led central Government supports her to the hilt as was done by the Congress led UPA Government to Omar Abdullah in 2010. However, the BJP leadership has indicated that it was going to support Mehbooba Mufti. As violence erupted after the killing of militant Burhan Wani, the ruling BJP asserted an "uncompromising" fight against terrorism, "eruption or no eruption"."The government will stand firm, eruption or no eruption," senior BJP leader Ram Madhav - the party's in charge of Jammu and Kashmir -tweeted, making clear its stance on the unfolding situation in the state.Madhav said the BJP, both in the state and the Centre, would continue to work for peace and security of the common man in the Valley and create an atmosphere for the development of the state and "an uncompromising fight against terrorism is part of BJP's agenda."
During the last about four years or so the security scenario in the Kashmir valley has experienced a marked change in the sense that people attend funeral ceremony of militants, killed in encounters. These very people stage protest demonstrations even if unknown militants get killed. And the scene was missing between 1989 and 2007.At that stage whenever militants got killed in operations there were no street clashes with the security forces.May be majority of people did not relish presence of foreign mercenaries in Kashmir. And their killing in operations launched by security forces did not evoke any public resentment and anger. Now that large groups of local boys have joined militant outfits their killing could evoke peoples' anger and protest demonstrations. This is the time when the security forces have to be given a free hand in dealing with the situation. And Mehbooba need not worry about her vote bank because once the turmoil ended she has four years to show results. And the central Government should help in resolving various problems that confront people. First is the energy crisis which has piled up anger of people against the Government. There are other problems including unemployment, poor investment in the sector of industry. The Government should ensure that the ongoing Amarnath yatra did not remain suspended for more days and safety and security of pilgrims have to ensured. There lies success in the coalition Government.
