Omar does U-turn, says ready to cooperate | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, July 11: Convinced that his provocative tweets had invited only ire from across the country, NC working president and Leader of Opposition in the J&K Legislative Assembly, Omar Abdullah, has started doing a U-turn to establish that he is for peace, and not for further aggravation of the situation in the troubled Kashmir. He has, on the one hand, assured the Mehbooba Mufti's coalition government of his support to her efforts calculated to restore peace in the Valley, and on the other hand, also expressed solidarity with the family of the policeman, who got killed in Kashmir on Sunday. "His (Omar's) party is ready to contribute towards maintaining peace in Kashmir but Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti should take the lead to show the way instead of 'hiding' behind spokesperson and police officers as they were not elected by the people," he said. In effect, he tweeted and his tweet read: "Dear @Mehbooba Mufti We in @JKNC_ are always ready to contribute towards maintaining peace but you must take the lead & show the way," Omar said in a series of tweets". "More than anyone else I know what you're going through @Mehbooba Mufti & I can assure you that we will follow your lead but lead YOU must," Omar another tweet said. It is obvious that he referred to his own experience as Chief Minister of the State during the 2010 summer agitation in the valley that had left nearly 120 people dead. Omar Abdullah, who was under severe attack for his earlier tweets which had virtually condoned the crimes of Hizbul Mujahideen's dreaded poster boy in Kashmir Burhan Wani and presented him before the gullible Kashmiri Muslims a Kashmiri "icon", not only promised his party's support to the Mehbooba Mufti government, but he also went a step further to show solidarity with the family of the policeman, who lost his life while discharging his official duties. In fact, he tweeted in this regard. His tweet read: "@omar_abdullah Those who glorify who glorify the stone pelting & violence should spare a thought for the family of this dead policeman". Compare his these tweets with his earlier tweets on the situation in Kashmir which developed in the aftermath of the liquidation of terrorist Burhan Wani and his two associates with his earlier tweets on the same issue and you will find a huge difference. If his earlier tweets were aimed at adding more fuel to the fire, cornering Mehbooba Mufti and her government and taking political mileage out of the dangerous situation developed in the Valley after the Burhan Wani episode, his other tweets were an attempt to prove that he is a politician who would never exploit such occasions for political gains. That Omar Abdullah had read the writing on the wall or concluded that his earlier tweets had damaged him and his reputation could also be seen from the fact that all those leaders who spoke for the party talked sense. They asked all to maintain restraint and not make any statement that had the potential of further aggravating the situation in the Valley. Now that Omar Abdullah has indicated his willingness to contribute towards maintaining peace in the Valley, one can hope others would also follow suit and join hands against the stone pelters and those attacking the state, police stations, government buildings and setting on fire public properties. It is the need of the hour. Terrorists and unruly elements have to be dealt with sternly. |
