Holy River Devika in pitiful condition | Local leadership, administration apathy turns it into 'sewage carrying drain' | | Early Times Report UDHAMPUR, July 11: Devika River in Udhampur district is a holy river, synonymous with religious rituals and traditions and people following spiritual, devout rituals on different occasions. Notwithstanding its religious significance and sentiments of people, the river is in a state of utter neglect thanks to the apathy shown both by local political leadership as also the District administration who have scant regard towards its pathetic plight. As per the ancient scriptures and other religious documents saint Kashyap after worshipping for a long period and meditation was gifted with this sacred River Devika by lord Shiva. The glimpses of sacred River Devika can be viewed at Jandrah, Pramandal and Udhampur with its waters flowing amid serene atmosphere. Apart from these places it flows, albeit sort of clandestinely, beneath the earth towards unknown destination, is what many devotees believe. As per Hindu tradition the remnants after death of people are offered to the holy River Devika for the ultimate peace of the departed soul. Another fact of the River Devika is that the remains of the body after being delivered to the sacred river are not visible elsewhere. Inspite of all these beliefs and sacred values associated with the people, the holy river lies in utter state of neglect in many ways. While talking to Early Times, Anil Paba lamented the condition as a shame and stigma for the local leadership who are indifferent towards its deteriorating condition. District Administration and the state government of state is equally responsible for ignoring this holy River Devika. The local leadership with the support of District Administration is making this holy place a hub of business industry in order to earn huge profits, he said. Vikas Pàdha, a social worker said the spiritual reverence for rivers remains unaffected. But the condition of the rivers show that we have totally failed in marinating it , belittling in a way our reverence for rivers. Devika the sacrosanct river has turned into sewage carrying drain. This poses a serious health problem as millions of people continue to depend on this river and at the same time it has special place in the lives of the Udhampur people. They consider river to be sacred, take holy dip during amavasya (New moon), Pooranmasi (Full moon) and on other religious occasions. River water is used for irrigation which in return gives food to the people. They also maintain the ecology of the region and bring prosperity. But unfortunately, during the past two decades the water quality of this river has deteriorated at a rapid pace. One of the major reasons for this is the untreated waste water being released to the rivers, turning them to be a dirty drain. The Ganga and the Yamuna, the two most sacred rivers of our country are no exception to it. Thousands of crores of rupees is being pumped to save the rivers through various plans. It is the high time to take initiatives towards creating awareness amongst the community about the importance of rivers and how the community is affected if they are not properly managed, feel most of the people of Udhampur. |
