500 new recruits joining militancy, Home Ministry informed | New Delhi to directly tackle Kashmir situation | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, July 12: Sensing that the J&K government has failed to tackle the situation arising in the wake of killing of Hizb commander Burhan Muzaffar Wani on July 8, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked the Union Home Ministry to personally supervise efforts for revival of normalcy in the trouble-torn Valley. Security arrangements are set to be intensified through deployment of more battalions of the paramilitary forces in the Valley whereas BSF is likely take over charge from CRPF in south Kashmir in the first phase. A high level team is set to visit the Valley in the coming days. Highly placed sources said New Delhi has got intelligence inputs that Burhan had managed to attract around 500 youth to join militancy in the recent past. "All of them as per the inputs are fresh recruits yet to get fully active," the sources said adding Home Ministry has been informed about the matter. Sources said after a meeting with the National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, and senior intelligence operatives, Home Minister Rajnath Singh discussed the matter threadbare with Prime Minister Nardendra Modi, at the meeting which the latter chaired. Source said the Prime Minister asked the Home Ministry to tactfully manage the situation before it festers any further. Sources said the Home Ministry has inputs that around 100 militants, including fresh recruits attended the funeral of Burhan in Tral. Interestingly, no one from the J&K government was called for the high level meeting held in the national capital. Minister of State in Prime Minister's Office Jitendra Singh, however, attended the meeting. Sources said there was a likelihood that security paraphernalia in the Valley would be beefed up further through construction of new bunkers, mostly along Srinagar-Jammu highway while developmental programs are underway to prevent youth from joining the ranks of militants. New Delhi has taken a serious note of the situation arising in Kashmir in the recent past as over 30 people have died in street protests whereas over 1000 are wounded. Meanwhile Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed to people of Kashmir to maintain peace and calm in the curfew-bound Valley. "Prime Minister has appealed to the people of Jammu and Kashmir to maintain calm and peace so that normalcy returns in the valley," Minister of State in Prime Minister's Office Jitendra Singh told reporters soon after the meeting concluded. The meeting was attended by Home Minister Rajnath Singh, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and senior security officers. |
