Early Times Report

Srinagar, July 12: Despite a mob attack on a non migrant colony at Wanabal Rawalpora in Budgam district, the Kashmiri Muslims upholding communal harmony and brotherhood hosted the marriage ceremony of a Pandit girl.
Minakshi, daughter of Chaman Lal from Kralpora Pandit Mohalla was married on Monday to one of the pandits of Bagh-e-Mehtab, with Muslim neighbors hosting the marriage.
The non migrant Pandits of the area informed Early Times that panic gripped the entire pandit colony during the early hours on Monday when a mob protesting against the killing of youth attacked the colony with stones.
"We were busy in the arrangements of marriage of our girl. But the mob attacked us with stones and the families residing in the area got so scared that they were demanding their eviction to safer places," one of the Pandit resident told Early Times.
However he said, to restore the confidence of the Pandit residents, some of the local Muslims intervened and managed to calm down the mob.
The brother of Minakashi who was getting married said that after witnessing the stone pelting, we decided to cancel the marriage ceremony and planned to organize the marriage ceremony at Jammu. "But the Muslim neighbours here didn't allow us to go anywhere and urged us to solemnize it here only," he said.
He said that later all the arrangements for the marriage and the guests were made by the Muslim neighbours. "They took care of each and every ritual of the marriage," he said.
He said that both Muslims and the Pandit women sang Wanwun -the customary Kashmiri marriage songs.
He said separate preparations were made for the Muslim and the Pandit guests who accompanied the bridegroom's Baraat.
"The marriage reminded me of my younger days when the Muslims used to be part of every Pandit marriage," said a guest who had come from Jammu.
"I wish people who are out to incite communal passions see how we can live in harmony with Muslims,' he said while referring to the event.
"Minakshi is just like our daughter. She had been bought up here. It was more than an obligation for us to see her getting married at her native place," said Asdullah Sofi, a neighbour.
