Kashmir continues to simmer, death toll reaches 37 | | | Jehangir Rashid
Early Times Report SRINAGAR, July 13: The death toll in the continuous violence in Kashmir reached 37 today with two persons falling to bullets of police and security forces in South Kashmir's districts of Anantnag and Kulgam. At the same time two persons who were injured in the protests succumbed to their injuries in the hospital. Police recovered the body of a youth who went missing on Saturday after taking part in the funeral procession of Hizbul Mujahideen Commander Burhan Muzaffar Wani. A youth identified as Javed Ahmad of Hawoora-Mishpoora village of Qaimoh in Kulgam district succumbed to his injuries at SKIMS. Javed along with some of the other persons sustained injuries after police and security forces opened fire on a group of people who were protesting against the killing of HM Commander and the civilians over the past four days. In the evening yet another youth was killed when police and security forces confronted a group of protesters at Harnag in Anantnag district near the Srinagar-Jammu national highway. The clashes were going on in the area and the adjacent ones. The deceased youth has been identified as Hilal Ahmad son of Ali Mohammad Sofi resident of Hanji Danter, Harnag. It has been learnt that the protesters set on fire a hut of Forest department in the area. In the meantime, Mushtaq Ahmad Dar of Hadpora village of Qazigund who had received critical injuries on Saturdaysuccumbed to his injuries last night in the hospital. Another youth Shahid Ahmad Magray of Larnoo-Kokernag too succumbed to his injuries last night. Meanwhile, the body of a youth identified as Zahoor Ahmad Matoo of Krisgam-Kakapora in Pulwama district was fished out from river Jehlum near Awantipora this afternoon. Zahoor had left home to attend the funeral prayers of Burhan on Saturday and since then his whereabouts were known. A lady from Sedow-Shopian was critically injured on Tuesday evening when police used force to quell the protesters who attacked the cavalcade of a police official. She is being treated at SKIMS and her condition is stated to be critical. Some other persons sustained minor injuries in the firing incident. Reports said that protests broke out in Rawalpora, Hyderpora and Nowgam areas of Srinagar district, Narbal area of Budgam district, Ganderbal, Khudwani, Qaimoh areas of Kulgam district, Patukhah, Sopore of Baramulla district, Imam Sahib area of Shopian district, Kakapora in Pulwama and Kralpora, Trehgam, Langate and Lalpora areas of Kupwara district. A police spokesman said the situation in the Kashmir valley remained under control today though some incidents of stone pelting were reported. The spokesman said that stray and intermittent incidents of stone pelting were reported from Khudwani, Kulgam, Putkha Sopore, Main Chowk Sopore, Iman Sahib, Shopian, Kakpora, Kralpora, Kupwara, Trehgam, Langate and Lalpora. "Early today, militants fired upon the vehicle of SDPO Zainapora near Malik Gund, Imam Sahib Shopian when he was on way to Imam Sahib along with law and order deployment. There was no loss of life/injuries in this incident," said the police spokesman. Meanwhile, police arrested separatist leaders Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq when they tried to break the police cordon and reach the martyrs graveyard at Khawaja Bazar in order to pay tributes to the martyrs. While Geelani was lodged at the Humhama police post under the jurisdiction of Budgam police station, Mirwaiz has been lodged at the Nigeen police station. In the meantime, normal life continues to be paralyzed in Kashmir following the imposition of curfew like restrictions in many parts and strike called for by the separatists against the killing of civilians following Burhan's death. Due to the enforcement of restrictions and strike each and every sphere of civilian activity was affected in the Kashmir valley. In the Srinagar city curfew like restrictions were imposed in areas falling under the police stations of Nowhatta, Maharaj Gunj, Khanyar, Rainawari, Safa Kadal and Maisuma. Curfew like restrictions were imposed in all the major districts and towns of South Kashmir that include Anantnag, Pulwama, Kulgam, Shopian, Pampore, Awantipora, Bijbehara and Tral. |
