Unrest takes toll on valley marriages
500 functions cancelled

Srinagar, July 13: The prevailing unrest in Kashmir valley has forced around five hundred families to cancel their scheduled marriage ceremonies and lavish parties.
Reports collected by the early times said that hundreds of marriage ceremonies which were scheduled in the second week of July were postponed due to the unrest and the death of civilians "Around 500 hundred wedding have been cancelled so far and if the same situation continues in the valley more people will cancel their already scheduled marriage ceremonies," the senior citizens of the valley told Early Times.
"How can people move and attend marriage functions when there is curfew and violence around," they said.
Ever since the situation got effected in the valley Local newspapers are splashed with messages cancelling invitations issued for the weddings.
The announcement of invitation cancellations have especially come from Srinagar city which is under curfew since four days.
"Due to prevailing situation in the valley, the wedding invitation of my daughter which was scheduled on 15th and 16th stands cancelled. However, Nikah ceremony will take place on same date. Kindly bear with us. Inconvenience is regretted," said an advertisement published by Ghulam Hassan Rengrez of Nawakadal Nowshara of old city Srinagar.
An advertisement next to the Hassan in the same daily reads: "In the wake of the unrest in the valley, the invitation of marriage ceremony of my son " Shakir Hussain Jan" which was scheduled on 15th and 16th at 275, Govt, Housing colony Baghi- Mehtab Srinagar stands cancelled.
It is to mention here that every widely-circulated newspaper of the valley has dozens of such messages.
Mohmmad Yousf of Bemina area is among those who have cancelled the marriage ceremony of his daughter due to the ongoing unrest. "I have cancelled my daughter's marriage ceremony scheduled on July 18th due to prevailing situation in the city," he said, adding the family had been preparing for the celebrations for the last one month.
He also said that he has already given the advance to chefs and butchers for preparing the feast.
Kashmir's organize a grand feast, popularly known as Wazwan, during wedding ceremonies in which liberal quantities of mutton and chicken are served.
The Kashmir valley had been simmering for the past four days following the killing of the civilians.
