Azad proposes, Sham disposes | Conflict within | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Jul 16: The Congress is in a bad shape. It is also in a destruct mode. It has no policy and its leaders speak in different languages. They also change their stand in no time keeping into consideration political expediency, vote bank politics and the wishes or views of their respective constituencies, though they do practically nothing for their constituencies. The last few days have witnessed a senior Congress leader and leader of the opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad changing his stand on the situation in Kashmir and one Jammu-based senior Congress leader and former cabinet minister Sham Lal Sharma taking an altogether a different line - a line that contradicts his party chief's stand, as also contradicts the stand of former JKPCC chief Saif-ud-Din Soz. A day after the security forces eliminated Burhan Wani and two of his associates in the Kokarnag area of Kashmir, Azad took a line which was hailed by the entire Indian nation. Justifying his killing, he had said those who get involved in such heinous activities one day get killed at the hands of the security forces and had commended the security forces' role in Kashmir. He had not spoken the language the perverted peace-mongers and perverted champions of human rights speak. Indeed, his was a great intervention. However, the other day, he changed his stand and charged the security forces with using excessive force against the stone-pelters. And, he crossed the line when he accused the BJP, nay Prime Minister Narendra Modi, of replicating Gujarat in Kashmir. He sought to create an impression that the present PDP-BJP dispensation in J&K and the Modi Government at the centre were anti-Kashmiri Muslims and that they were killing innocent Kashmiri Muslims. Such statements were not expected from Azad, who has been in national politics for decades and who led the Congress in the state for years and also led the state government for almost three years. By saying what he said the other day, he only lowered his position in the eyes of the nationalist constituency across the nation as well as Jammu and Ladakh. On the other hand, Sham Lal Sharma a day later took a different line. He didn't say a single word against the security forces and also urged the people not to eulogize Burhan Wani and those who ere involved in anti-India activities, as also involved in terror-related activities. Of course, he lambasted the BJP but the reasons were different: he charged the BJP with leaving the Amarnath Yatris in the lurch and he also accused the BJP of not fulfilling any of the promises it had made in 2014 to garner votes in Jammu. Sham Lal Sharma was right as what he said was perfectly in order. The Congress is a national party. It is incumbent upon its leaders to conduct themselves in a responsible manner and not make statements which have the potential of fomenting communal trouble or widening the gulf between the communities. |
