Kashmir unrest: Heads likely to roll | Reshuffle of Police Deptt on cards | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, July 16: In yet another bid to restore law-and-order in restive Kashmir, the state government is planning to go for a "quick reshuffle" in the police department. Highly placed sources said apart from the Inspector General of Police, Kashmir range, two Deputy Inspector Generals and some Senior Superintendents of Police heading various districts of Kashmir are to be transferred in the coming days. Sources said the government is planning to replace IGP Kashmir SJM Geelani. Names of at least three IGPs are under consideration for the coveted post. They include AG Mir, Syed Afadul Mujtaba and Sardar Muneer Ahmed Khan. While Mir is being seen as experienced hand who has already served as the IGP Kashmir for two years, Mujtaba and Khan are also being seen as equally efficient hands. Sources said the state government would take decision in this regard after getting suggestions from the intelligence agencies and advisors. Apart from the IGP, DIGs of north and south Kashmir are scheduled to be transferred, the sources said. However, sources said the biggest challenge before the government is to find a compatible replacement for the post of SSP Srinagar. While the incumbent SSP Srinagar, Amit Kumar is seen as one of the "most successful officials who managed the City as fort for over two years," his transfer stands "overdue." "See Srinagar, is the heart of Kashmir and the situation here has a direct impact on the life elsewhere in Kashmir, so government is keenly looking at the pros and cons of brining in any of the replacements. It's like a tough contest between four names under active consideration," the sources said adding "Kumar's successor will have the most challenging task." Though a major shakeup was on cards in the wake of militant attack on a CRPF bus on Pampore highway last month, the prevalent situation in the Valley has compelled the government to go for "immediate transfers." "After the visit of Home Minister Ranjath Singh to Kashmir, major transfers were due but now there's a more compelling situation," said a source privy to the plans. He said instead of major reshuffle some four to five prime transfers would be made. Since the killing of militant commander Burhan Muzaffar Wani on July 8, the Jammu and Kashmir Police has been on tenterhooks struggling to bring back Kashmir to normalcy while the union Home ministry is personally keeping track of developments. Security analysts have been the telling the central government that the state police couldn't tackle the situation the way it was tackled in 2013 when Parliament attack convict Muhammad Afzal Guru was hanged in February 2013. Over 40 persons have died in street protests while over 3000 lie wounded hospitals. Around 100 of them are feared to lose eyesight due to pellet injuries. |
