Militants, supporters out to terrify Mukhbirs | After burning houses in Kokernag, 2 youth shot at in Pulwama | | Early Times Report
Jammu, July 16: A few days after setting ablaze the house of Ghulam Mohammed Sheikh, the maternal uncle of one of the Hizbul Mujahideen militants, Sartaj Sheikh, who was killed along with Burhan Wani and another militant, gunmen shot at and injured two persons Shabir Ahmed Pandit and Manzoor Ahmed Pandit at Karimabad Pulwama in south Kashmir on Saturday. Both the men were shot on their legs. Sources said that victims were fired upon on the suspicion of being informers and are believed to be the distant relatives of the close aide of slain Burhan Wani, Tariq Pandit, who was arrested by Police and Army in May this year. Sources said that there are speculations that Burhan and his associates were killed due to the information provided by the people close to them. Earlier this week the mob on the basis of suspicion that it was Ghulam Mohammad Sheikh who had acted as a police informer (mukhbir), and given away Burhan's whereabouts set ablaze his house at Bamdoora village on Larkipora-Kokernag road. In Bamdoora village, nine houses were set on fire after Burhan's killing as the agitated youth suspected a few other villagers to be police informers. Two more youth being shot at and injured in Pulwama has triggered panic in south Kashmir as a few people are trying to label everyone as a "Police informer." "This is a dangerous trend and can lead to civil war within Kashmir. It looks like that 1990s has returned. In the hey days of militancy whenever any militant used to get killed as a fallout of the militant killing, many civilians were labeled as informers and shot dead. The so-called chief of Al-Umar Mujhaideen Mushtaq Zargar alias Latram was arrested by the security forces from a house in old city in nineties. A few days after his arrest that house was razed to ground by the Latram's supporters and aides," said an analyst. Sources said that as Police and security agencies are busy in tackling the emerging situation in Kashmir in wake of the protests against Burhan's killing, the militants and their supporters are busy spreading rumours about informers to "settle their personal scores." "Situation in volatile Kashmir Valley is grim. Militants and their bosses are trying their best to take advantage of the situation by terrorizing the people and by keeping the pot boiling," they said, "If the protests are not contained situation can taken an ugly turn as militants are leaving no stone unturned to terrorize the civilians." |
