SRINAGAR, July 16: One more person was killed today in the firing of police and security forces in North Kashmir's Kupwara district. With this the death toll in continued violence in Kashmir reached 43.
Reports said that protests broke out in some areas of the Kupwara district. Groups of agitating youth came out on main roads and protested against the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen Commander Burhan Muzaffar Wani and more than 40 civilians in different parts of Kashmir valley. The protesters pelted stones on police and security forces personnel.
The police and security forces personnel lobbed dozens of smoke shells in order to bring the situation under control. One of the protests turned violent at Hatmulla with police and security forces personnel opening fire on the protesters. The firing led to injuries to serious injuries to three youth.
One of the youth identified as Showkat Malik later on succumbed to his injuries in a hospital.
With Showkat's killing the death toll in the violence that erupted across Kashmir valley in the evening on July 8 following Burhan's death reached 43. The dead include two police personnel who were killed in Sangam and Yaripora-Kulgam areas in South Kashmir.
Reports said that protests broke out in the Batmaloo area in Srinagar and some other areas across Kashmir with majority of protests being carried out in North Kashmir.
Protests were carried out by people against the civilian killings at Patukhah, Sopore, Dangiwacha, Bandipora, Langate and Handwara. Some of the protesters sustained injuries during the protests.
A police spokesman said the overall situation in Kashmir valley remained under control today though some incidents of stone pelting were reported. The spokesman said that stray and intermittent incidents of stone pelting were reported from Pothkhah, Dangiwacha in Sopore, Hatmulla in Kupwara and Langate in Handwara.
"At Hatmulla, a violent mob attacked the police post Hatmulla. While dealing with the situation three people were injured. One of them later on succumbed to his injuries. An unruly mob set on fire a police guard room at Wullar Vintage Park in Bandipora," said the police spokesman.
In the meantime, barring Kupwara and Bandipora districts the entire Kashmir valley was put under curfew by the state government. Strict curfew was imposed in all the areas of Srinagar, Budgam, Ganderbal, Anantnag, Pulwama, Shopian, Kulgam and Baramulla districts. Normal life continues to remain paralyzed across Kashmir due to the enforcement of restrictions and strike call given by the separatists.
Meanwhile, the state government during the preceding night raided media houses in summer capital and stopped printing of newspapers. Besides it seized thousands of newspaper copies which were ready to be circulated. Anticipating spread and out pour of protests, police personnel boarding four vehicles, raided at least two newspaper printing presses in Rangreth Industrial Estate in uptown Srinagar.
The authorities clamped down on media barring it from printing and circulating the newspapers. The authorities have passed on directions to the editors of all the newspapers to stop the publication until July 18. The editors have also been asked to desist from giving space to the statements of separatist leaders.
Many of newspaper editors, correspondents and press photographers carried out a sit-in in the press enclave here and condemned the police action of carrying out raids on printing presses in summer capital of the state. They also took a jibe at the government for asking them to stop publishing the newspapers for the next three days. The state government also blocked the cable television service in the valley.
In the meantime two persons, including a relative of a surrendered militant, were shot at and injured by suspected militants in Pulwama district of Kashmir on Friday night.
Reports said that Shabir Ahmad Pandit, cousin of the surrendered militant Tariq Ahmad Pandit and Manzoor Ahmad were shot at by suspected militants at Karimabad in Pulwama district. The injured persons were shifted to hospitals in Srinagar for treatment. Tariq had deserted police force to join militant group led by Burhan Wani.
