Rigorously excluded Jammu youth deserves kudos | Stone-pelters in Kashmir | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, July 16: The killing of Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists Burhan Wani last Friday in the Kokarnag area of Kashmir in what the Army on Friday termed as "genuine, well-coordinated and surgically conducted operation with a precision" has triggered a debate on why the Kashmiri young boys had been indulging in violent activities. A leading news portal,newslaundry.com, even organized a debate on why "young boys are turning into stone-pelters in Kashmir"? The focus of the whole debate was on Kashmir, Kashmiri society and the so-called problems facing it and the Kashmiri youth and there was no reference to Jammu province, its people and problems facing by them and the Jammu youth. In fact, the whole debate was lop-sided, biased and not holistic. But it was not altogether unexpected. Jammu, Jammu people and the youth of Jammu province never got any space during all these years of the state's accession with India. The reasons behind the Kashmiri young men turning into stone-pelters are not far to seek. The most important one is the radicalization of the Valley, the negative role of Kashmiri leaders, both "mainstream" and separatist as well as the failure of the Kashmiri civil society to educate young men about the evil effects of the cult of terror and the kind of politics the Kashmiri leaders had been taking recourse and young men under the influence of extremists had been indulging in senseless violence and attacking the Indian state and all symbols of the Indian state. Kashmir is the most prosperous region in India where not a single Kashmiri till date has died of hunger or cold and it is also the most politically powerful region in the country, as it has been controlling the state's political, financial and social institutions since 1947. But more than that, the employment rate in Kashmir is highest in India. Besides, the Government of India has launched a number of schemes which help Kashmiri you get jobs and acquire higher education almost free of cost outside Kashmir. Take, for example, Burhan Wani. He belonged to a very prosperous Kashmiri family. That the Kashmiri young boys still take recourse to violent methods and attack the Indian State and its symbols, throw petrol bombs and set on fire public property is a matter of grave concern. It appears the causes are deeper and obviously the most striking one is their commitment to separatist ideology or faith in Wahabi cult or the cult of the Salafis. Compare Jammu, Jammu society and its financial health and plight of the talented Jammu youth with that of Kashmir and you will find a huge, huge difference. Take, for instance, the plight of young boys and girls of Jammu province. Their plight is miserable and pathetic. They are rigorously excluded by the authorities in New Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir. The employment rate in Jammu province is the lowest in India and the unemployment rate highest in India. The rate of unemployment in Jammu province is almost 70 per cent and this is what a peep into the assembly records show. The Jammu youth need to be hailed because they never took to the kind of means their counterparts in Kashmir practice almost on a daily basis. The opinion-makers across the country, especially Delhi-based, would do well to study the assembly records and the state's annual budgets. This is a must for them to know the true picture of facts. |
