Early Times Report

Jammu, July 25: As the unrest in Kashmir is refusing to die down, two main factors -politician-public relations and police public relations that would have proved facilitators in building peace are absolutely missing at the ground zero level.
Neither have the politicians made any effort to build a bridge in the hour of turbulence, nor are the police officers trying to build rapport with common masses in angry mode.
Sources said even though the Kashmir based politicians from both ruling and opposition have been clamouring and criticizing each other with loud peace calls, these are only cosmetic political therapies. This approach has not yielded any fruitful result from any area of the turbulent Valley as none of the politicians have tried to reach out to masses on the ground level.
There is a huge gap between the tall politicians and the common masses , sources said, adding that these leaders from almost all parties have kept their agents who occasionally meet public on their whims and wishes. Sources further said that these political agents 'employed and engaged' by the leaders have been active for a long time and calling shots in many ways when there was peace much before this unrest broke out. They have been acting in their own way to address the problems of the people and their bosses remain blissfully ignorant about most of their activities and modus operandi in dealing with the masses, sources said.
This approach of being selective and whimsical in reaching out to masses has further added the feeling of alienation among the masses, sources said, adding that corruption and money works well in their working.
On the other hand, Police Public rapport which works as a healing balm under such situations is completely missing from the ground in all the districts.
Though violent protests have been controlled and curfew is still enforced in many parts, where the situation is improving gradually, police-public meetings in a friendly way with support of civil society have not been initiated nor tried by the government.
This initiative at the police officials level could have helped reduce some anger among the masses but the senior police officials are not risking into this task, sources said.
Such meetings between political leaders and masses as also between senior cops and the aggrieved public have proved therapeutic and remedial in restring peace in many conflict like situations in the past but this time both are staying apart, sources further said.
