Traffic cops at receiving end in restive Kashmir | | | Majid Nabi
Early Times Report
Srinagar, July 25: Traffic police mrn deployed on deserted roads of Srinagar city have been facing tough times in the wake of current unrest as the youth not only violating traffic norms but beating and abusing cops if asked to stop for document checking. Many cops who have been performing their duties relentlessly even in this volatile situation in Kashmir were either beaten by youth or showered with choicest abuses if asked to stop for paper checking or being without crash helmet while driving. "We have been facing an extremely challenging situation since past ten days, many of our colleagues were beaten at many places in Srinagar who have been deployed for challan collection on roads, we cannot blame youth for the mess but our seniors who put our lives at risk," said a traffic cop. Pertinently traffic police cops could be seen realizing challan on roads from bikers at many places who drives without crash helmet or for lacking essential documents including pollution, insurance or Registration Certificate. A senior cop claimed that they afraid to perform duties in such a volatile situation as people not only violating the norms but beating traffic cops on the middle of the roads. "We are also human beings, why should we use as shields. There are three hundred traffic points in Srinagar city and we have strict orders of our seniors to realize challan form fifteen bikers at each point on daily basis," he added. He said that the youth during past fifteen days have not only been violating traffic norms but also beating cops performing duties on roads. "We have been deployed for traffic regulation and not for law and order, yesterday I humbly requested a minor to wear helmet while riding motorbike but he instead of feeling sorry showered choicest abuses on me, and this is height of disobedience," he said. Another cop alleged that a group of bikers when stopped near Sonwar for carrying more than two persons that too without helmet slapped their senior on his face "authorities should suspend us or withheld our salary as we cannot tolerate this nonsense anymore" He said that their higher-ups should think about their safety and then order them to perform duty in such a grimy situation. "We are performing duties but our seniors have no feelings for us, what about our families if some tragedy takes place. I appeal our seniors to kindly think about us and forget about realizing challan till the situation gets normal on ground," he said. |
