Child labour on rise, but none cares | | | Early Times Report
Udhampur, July 25: believe it or not there is rise in child labour in Udhampur district as children below the age of 14 are seen working as helpers on shops, vehicle cleaners and even at dhabas and doing other menial jobs. The main reason behind the menace in district is poverty and illiteracy as people in far and remote villages in a view to make some easy money send their wards to urban areas to work there and earn some money. Further the child labour is cheap and their employers are well aware that these children cannot raise their voice against them by forming unions, even if they are poorly paid. Some social activists Arun Kumar, Amit Singh, Sham Lal and others from Udhampur told to Early Times that hundreds of children could be seen working at different shops and other work places but authorities concerned yet have failed to take a step in this regard. They also said that many of children doing any sort of work for pea nuts and many times are harassed also. Locals urged Deputy Commissioner Neeraj Kumar to take up matter with J&K Labour Department Udhampur to rescue the children working at various works places. Labour Commissioner Nirmal Pawar briefly said that the department is time to time conducting market checks in and around city and other places and no such case has been reported. He however added i will ensure that department will rescue any child if a child labour case is reported to the department. |
