Agricultural land of Village Tanda not worth farming due to polluted water | | | Neeraj Badyal Early Times Report Samba, Sept 8: : Agricultural land of village Tanda in Samba district not worth farming due to polluted water. Thousand of Kanals land of the farmers of this village is totally barren due to damage caused by Pesticide industries. The People of village Tanda and adjoining areas are also grip in pollution. People allege that when this pesticide units was set up in SIDCO phase one Samba, several requests were made to the State Govt and Industry minister but only fake promises were doled out to the people of this village. Farmer said village Tanda is famous for cauliflower. The land of our village is worth not farming due to polluted water. Pesticide industries flow the polluted water directly outside the drains and this polluted water mix in Basantar and directly in the fields. Several times the villagers protest against PCB and State Govt but no action taken against the Pesticide units till now. The industry has been causing grave damage to our farm lands, drinking and irrigation water sources and the environment while successive governments and political parties directly or indirectly supported the industry and ignored our woes. People blamed that several times requests were made to the PCB authorties ,but PCB officers dole out only fake promise to the people of this villages, and no action is taken against the said units. Farmers in the area used to grow paddy, Cauliflower and wheat in the fields before setting up of the Pesticide industries in Samba. Since pesticide industries started in SIDCO samba, the fields have totally damaged due to polluted water. Dozens of pesticide industries were located on the banks of the Basantar river. Many of them did not follow the rules of the pollution control department . Few days earlier countless fish died due to polluted water. According to the Villagers they used to draw water for irrigation which have been contaminated. Water in the river became so contaminated that even cattle which drank the water fell ill and died. In his village dozens of cattle have died due to contamination of water. We were not against the industry in the beginning. But when our livelihood started affected and our families ended up in penury, how can we keep quiet?" asks "Karnail Singh" a farmer of village Burj Sheru. |
