Stinking bus stand sans cool water for commuters | | | Vinod Sharma
Early Times Report
Jammu, Sept 8: Notwithstanding the repeated thrust of Prime Minister Narendra Modi through "Swachh Bharat Abhiyan" campaign to keep all areas clean, the stinking Jammu bus stand explains the seriousness of authorities about cleanliness. Littered garbage polythene carry bags, potholes full of dirty water and foul smell emanating from filthy urinal at the entrance besides an open filthy nullah are enough to dash the serious efforts of authorities and district administration Jammu to keep the bus stand clean, wherein thousands of people visit on routine basis. This pathetic condition is compounded by the absence of cool and purified water at the bus stand. A pilgrim Rajesh Kumar said that thousands of pilgrims, tourists, local migrants visit the bus stand every day and board the buses for every nook and corner of Jammu province and outside the state. "During summers there is lot of need of cold water but the two water coolers installed there are out of order for the last many months. The commuters are compelled to drink unhygienic and hot water or have to purchase it from shops", Kumar said. A shopkeeper Ravi Kumar said that there were only two water coolers, which were installed nearly eight years back. "The cooling system is not working besides the water coolers are not cleaned or chlorinated in last few years", he said. Ravi Kumar, another shopkeeper said that there was no proper cleanliness in the bus stand and foul smell always emanated from the garbage, plastic bags and the nullah. "The filthy surroundings are cause of dangerous diseases. During rains bus stand turned into a pond with garbage floats over it and ultimately led to more problem", he said. The shopkeepers criticized the district administration Jammu for their failure to maintain cleanliness in the area. |
