Ostricised lepers live in shabby mud shelters at Behrar
9/8/2016 10:53:48 PM
Majid Nabi
Srinagar, Sept 8: Lepers the society's most ostracized people have been living a distressed and extremely tough life in mud shelters at Behraar Colony here as the successive governments except for hollow promises have done nothing for their welfare.
The dejected lepers even claimed that the mud shelters they have been living over the years at Behraar Colony Lal Bazar on the city outskirts have never been repaired nor any measures were taken in this regard.
They said that the Omar Abdullah led collation government in 2009 had promised to provide hundred quarters to them, however the construction work on these quarters was left halfway by the authorities for unknown reasons.
"Government in 2009 Promised that concrete structures worth Rs 4.5 crores would be provided to us which would be completed in eighteen months however more than six years have elapsed but not a single structure has been completed yet," Sahrief-ud-Din Sheikh one of the protester told 'Early Times'.
He said government since the year 2009 changed many contractors owing to their incapability to complete the work but there seems no end for their completion.
"We have knocked every single door to take notice of our difficulties we are facing in infected mud structures but no one seems to be serious to address our problems. No doubt we are helpless but we want to make it clear we are not begging to the government but demanding our rights," added Sheikh.
Recalling the day when a group of cabinet Ministers visited the colony on June 21st 2009 and congratulated them for their dream of having a new colony come true Sheikh said "we were very much happy that day when work on new leper's colony was started but we crestfallen the moment work was abruptly stopped"
The leper's appealed the government to take serious note of their difficulties they are facing and provide them with adequate facilities.
"I would like to repeat that we are not beggars, we don't want to live a distressed life as we have suffered a lot since we were detected with this disease, if the government is really sincere and want to do something then some painstaking measures must be taken for us," Sheikh added.
