Early Times Report

Baramulla, Sept 13: On 68th day of unrest in Kashmir valley, the different Municipal Committees seem least bothered about the health and hygiene of common masses as heaps of garbage were seen piled up in every nook and corner of north Kashmir even on the auspicious occasion of Eid-ul Azha.
It may sound incredible for some that few towns of Baramulla district like Pattan, Tangmarag and especially Sopore which has attained an acronym 'Chota London of J&K for its sanitation' too has lost glory because of lackadaisical action from concerned Municipal Committees.
The concerned departments have put thousands of inhabitants on toes due to garbage and pollution created in the main towns of valley and that too on Eid festival.
A group of residents from various civil societies in these areas told Early Times that there is already a shut down in the Kashmir valley from past two and half months and people are facing in numerous problems in one or the other way, ironically a huge amount of solid wastes including plastic bags and other material find its way on the roadsides or seen chocking the drains in Baramulla district.
"We were really expecting that the municipal authorities might impress the men and machinery to clean areas ahead of Eid ul Azha festivity but all expectations dashed to grounds today when heaps of garbage mocked the people of area," said members of civil society.
Mohammad Ashraf of Baramulla said that, on routine basis about 79.25 metric tons (MT) per day are usually being thrown on roadsides and other institutions due to which piles of garbage invite all kinds of diseases and also become a hot spot for the stray dogs.
He said that, sadly enough the state government has miserably failed to put in place basic sanitation facilities here at various places across the north Kashmir.
Senior citizens of Baramulla town said that the Municipal Committee is not taking any interest in removing the garbage from the town, despite repeated requests in recent past.
Worth to mention here that people who went to offer prayers on Eid at their respective mosques and even at some open places and the piles of garbage become the topic of discussion. The people raised queries about the non serious approach of concerned Municipal Committees/Councils regarding various health and hygienic issues of common masses.
