| Dy Director, Principal at loggerheads to shift public library | | | G S Asgotra

Jammu, Sept 13: The issue of shifting public library R S Pura, lingering on for the past 26 years, which had brought heads of two departments at loggerheads, has finally reached at the doorsteps of MLA RS Pura, who has now assured to take appropriate action.
The Public library, R S Pura was constructed under Border Area Development Programme scheme in 1991 and since its beginning in 1991, the Library has been working from a rented building in RS Pura and a building was constructed in the premises of Government High School Boys RS Pura.
Demands have repeatedly been raised by locals and educated youth, time and again for shifting of the library but School Education and Library department are at loggerheads and creating obstacles to shift the library into the building constructed for the library.
When the library was sanctioned both Library and Research and State Education department were under one Ministry that was Education Ministry. Later when these two departments were bifurcated under two different ministries (Education & Culture ministry), the public library of RS Pura became a bone of contention between the two departments.
"For the last many years, both these departments Education and Culture have been leaving no stone unturned to blame each other, over shifting the library to the building, but virtually both of them have some paltry interest, which have been depriving reader the access to the library", a reader, Romesh Kumar alleged.
He further alleged that however, the official of the Library & Research Department has said that time and again they appealed the Principal of School to shift the library in the newly constructed building but when the official of library visited RS Pura school to shift the library, he refused.
"After running from pillar to post to officials of Libraries, and officials of School there is no further movement and stalemate continues for the last more than one decade. At present the library is running from a rented accommodation but the condition is very pathetic and all books are being eaten up by termite", said, Manik Sharma.
"Both the departments have failed to shift the library to the building. Tuesday, a delegation called on MLA RS Pura Gagan Bhagat, who assured that he would vigorously pursue the case", another person, who was part of delegation said.
He further said that MLA RS Pura very positively responded and immediately called the Principal and Deputy Director Libraries to resolve the issue. "The MLA has also assured us that the Library will be developed on modern lines and all facilities will be provided there", the delegation member said. |
