Poonch, Sept 13: The three day long fierce gun battle between security agencies and militants holed up in the Mini-Secretariat building in Poonch town ended today on Tuesday with the killing of the last pinned up militant.
Police sources said, "A total of four militants were gunned down in the encounter that began on Sunday morning. The bodies of four militants who had split into two groups have been retrieved."
"Two bodies were recovered from an old house of Haji Nazir Mir, a relative of deputy chairman of J&K Legislative Council Jehangir Mir whereas the bodies of two other militants were retrieved from the under construction building of Mini-Secretariat located in close vicinity Superintendent of police (SP). ''There were four militants in number and they have been killed,'' Inspector General of Police (IG) Johny Williams, In-charge Rajouri-Poonch Ranger here told.
Williams said the bodies have been retrieved while four AK rifles have also been recovered from an encounter site and the operation has been called off.
According to the police sources, the slain militants were part of fidayeen squad (suicide attackers) and were trained in Pakistan.
"They (militants) had crossed the Line of Control (LoC) to either attack army installations or disturb peace on the occasion of Eid," they added.
"Earlier the intermittent exchange of fire has been reported throughout the day yesterday and even last night. Though the firing stopped early morning from inside the under construction building but fire started later on re-triggering fierce gun battle," police sources said.
Police sources said, 'Taking the surrounding populated localities into consideration, the security forces taking due precautions to prevent any harm to civilians today made a final assault gunned down the last militant hiding in the target building."
Sources further added that the operation has been called off after sensitization of the two building i.e. Haji Nazir's house and the under construction building of Mini Secretariat.
Pertinently a policeman was killed, while seven others, including three police officials, a civilian and three soldiers, received bullet injuries during the encounter that had started around 7.10 am on Sunday.
