Eid celebrated with fervor, no greetings exchanged on social media due to internet ban | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Sept 13: The festival of Eid was today celebrated with fervor and gaiety but due to internet ban across Jammu region no greetings were exchanged on social media. The social sites and applications, which used to remain flooded with greetings and wishes on festivals, remained silent due to internet ban across the Jammu province ordered by the zonal police authorities apprehending that trouble-mongers may play spoilsport by positing or messaging rumors. As per order issued here late last night by the Zonal Police Headquarters the mobile and broadband internet services across the Jammu region have been snapped from wee hours till further orders. An order said that the mobile internet service and the broadband shall remain snapped in Doda, Kishtwar, Ramban, Rajouri and Poonch districts of Jammu province. "In view of the present security scenario in Jammu province, there is every apprehension that anti-national elements and miscreants can create law and order problem for the police and administration for their vested interest,'' read an order. A separate order said that there will be a complete snap down of mobile internet facilities in Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Udhampur and Reasi districts of the province. "The telecom service providers including the private and the government (BSNL) are requested to snap down complete mobile internet facilities in Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Udhampur and Reasi district of Jammu province with effect from 0400 hours positively till further order, as preventive measure to avoid any law and order problems and passing of rumours by miscreants and anti national elements,'' it read. However, festival of Eid was celebrated with fervor in this winter capital of the state. At Idgah, where the main function was held, thousands of Muslims assembled in the morning and prayed for peace and harmony in the state. They were wished 'Eid Mubarak' by their Hindu brothers and other sections of the society. Amid hugs and exchange of gifts, the festival was celebrated here. "I belong to Poonch but living in Jammu to pursue my studies but due to internet ban, I could not extend greetings on my Whatsapp to my family members as phones are hardly connecting in remote belts of the district due to poor connectivity,'' Bilal Ahmed, here said. He said that he had sent a text message to wish them on Eid but have not yet received any reply. Meanwhile, bazaars and markets gave decorative look especially in Muslim dominated localities on the festival. Bakery and meat shops witnessed heavy rush of customers. Children dressed colorfully, asked for 'Eidi' from parents and relatives. Reports from across the region comprising of all the ten districts said that Eid celebrations passed off peacefully despite Internet ban but there were resentment against the govt. and the police authorities for keeping people deprived of extending wishes to their loved ones on Eid on social media by snapping internet services. |
