Jammu, Sept 13: If it was a subdued Eid festival in Kashmir, Jammu celebrated it with zest and fervour, becoming home this time to many people from adjacent places, including Kashmir Valley. Contrary to Kashmir, as a peaceful Jammu region celebrated Eid-ul-Azha with religious fervor and gaiety, scores of families from different parts of Kashmir region converged here in the summer capital to celebrate the festivities and rituals connected with Eid.
From offering prayers in various mosques in a peaceful manner to distribution of gifts and offerings of sacrificial goats, the rituals were performed by the people from Kashmir in many areas of Jammu today. As always, Jammu became a voluntary place of choice for many families from Kashmir not only for staying here in peaceful localities bustling with activities of normal life but also to celebrate Eid festival and observe other social functions which people have been forced to defer due to ongoing turmoil continuing for the last over two months.
Shattered by the consistent and perpetual cycle of violence across the region, many families in fact started arriving here for the last over two weeks along with their children studying in different classes. Most of these families are however own their houses in localities like Bhatindi, Sidhra, Trikuta Nagar and Channi Himmat, sources said adding that they normally come to Jammu in winter months after arrival of Durbar move. But this time they chose it earlier for obvious reasons, sources said adding that though many of these families are refusing to attribute their early arrival amid hot humid weather conditions to the turbulent situation in Valley.
However, there are some who say it openly that they do not want the time of their wards in crucial academic years to get wasted any more which is why they have come here. While there are students who have got admission in the private coaching centers and tutorials, students of small levels (school standards) have also joined private tuition classes in city areas.
Drained and exhausted by continuous protests and violence as also by continuous spell of curfews, some families from Kashmir Valley got the venue of their marriages of their wards changed to Jammu region, sources said adding that these were however, a selected few who could afford to do shift the venues and get bookings in a couple of hotels here.
However, Jammu offered a tension free environment to celebrate the Eid festival today for all, in all respects. From bustling market places to malls bustling with shopping spree on Eid on one side to sale of eatables like bakery and sweets, it was available here everywhere. Eid also witnessed the observance of age old rituals of people from other faiths extending greetings to the people over here as also from guests from Kashmir Valley.
