Early Times Report

Jammu, Oct 1: A nine-day long Navratra festival today commenced with fanfare here and Katra town in Reasi district amid tight security arrangements and alert following India-Pakistan tension after Army's surgical operation.
Navratra festival being organised by Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Department at Katra town- the base camp for Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Cave Shrine, would commence tomorrow and continue for nine days featuring series of religious and cultural programmes.
Meanwhile, security forces have stepped up vigil after high alert was sounded in Jammu ahead of Navratras.
" Security has been beefed up at several vital points including popular market places," a senior police official here said.
He said that the foolproof security arrangements were significantly heightened at the Jammu airport, railway stations, bus stands and other vital installations across the region.
Director General of Police (DGP), K Rajendra Kumar has already reviewed security scenario in a meeting and asked the officers to supervise personally the work done for maintaining law and order and security in their respective areas.
Sleuths of Crime Branch and Police along with paramilitary forces have also been roped in and the security unit has been asked to form a strategy in connection with potential threats to vital places like temples and other important places.
Local police have been asked to remain extra vigilant and paramilitary forces have also been deployed in several parts of the city for quick response in case an emergency situation arises.
Adequate number of security personnel has been deployed besides holding of mock drills to ensure that a strong security grid is put in place.
Paramilitary and police personnel were patrolling and frisking people at important points in Jammu city, which is thronged by thousands of devotees every year, especially during Navratra. "There is much fanfare in Katra during Navratra festival and the inflow of tourists also rises manifold during those days. We have made proper security arrangements. We have also been assisted by the paramiltary forces", a police officer said.
