PDD engineer allots 1000 illegal power connections for money | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 1: Causing revenue losses worth lakhs of rupees to the state exchequer, a Power Development Department (PDD) engineer has illegally allotted around 1000 connections to consumers in Sunderbani Tehsil of Rajouri district and gets "monthly fee" from them to raise fortunes. Official sources said over 700 air-conditioners are operational in the main Sunderbani town without any requisite permission from the PDD though such connections if legally sanctioned would have to pay at least around Rs 1000 monthly fee taking the total monthly revenue to Rs 7,00,000. Likewise around 300 illegal connections are operational in Seyod Langer, Seiya Deval and Hathal areas. Around 100 saw mills have been given illegal connections to run their business units. "You can say the total revenue loss as being suffered by the PDD per month is around Rs fourteen lakhs," sources in the PDD said. They said this fraud was the brainchild of the concerned Junior Engineer PDD Vijay Kumar, who encouraged system of giving illegal connections only to raise personal fortunes. "He asks the illegal connection holders to pay him lesser than what they were supposed to pay through legal connection. This way consumers save money and the amount they pay is grabbed by the JE," said officials in PDD. They said they several times sought inspection in the suspect areas but that the JE who wields "political influence" sabotaged any such move which would get him trapped. "Why cannot the PDD inspection team make surprise visit and expose the reality or is it that corruption has to grow," the officials said. When contacted the concerned JE refused to comment saying he would call police. The Assistant Executive Engineer, on the other hand said, he was new to the posting and thus would be unable to comment on the issue. But the Superintendent Engineer PDD Gurmeet Singh said the matter would be seriously looked into. Meanwhile some PDD officials appealed Deputy Chief Minister who is also the Power Minister to hold an inquiry into the matter. "If the accused JE is not taking monthly bribe, where does the power go and where does the fee go? This needs to be ascertained," they asked.
