Srinagar, Oct 1: Despite people coming out in hordes to resume their normal lives after more than two months of unrest in Kashmir, the Jammu and Kashmir Bank continues to remain in hibernation with its employees preferring to stay away from their respective places of posting.
With situation in, otherwise, restive Kashmir valley limping back to normalcy, the business community, government employees and people whose livelihood is associated with their daily work have succeeded in getting their routine works back on track. However, for scores of JK Bank branches, the fate hasn't changed. The bank branches continue to function for a brief period that too during the wee hours. The bank authorities despite knowing how large chunk of Valley's population is directly associated with the functioning of the bank, have paid no heed to the hardships being faced by the common masses on ground due to Bank's limited functioning.

The bank branches open up at 6 in the morning while closing at around 9.a.m. The employees discharging their duties at these branches enjoy heydays at present while caring little about the problems people faced during closure of the bank for the entire day.

"The bank branches that function for a limited period resemble like ration depots. There is huge rush of people in these branches due to which a common person finds it hard to get the necessary work done," says Mukhtar Ahmad, a government employee. He questioned that when government employees, like him report to their duties daily, what is stops the JK Bank employees to work in routine coarse of time.
"We are not asking JK Bank to work extra hours for us. We merely want it to function as it is ought to. However, the JK bank continues to deem the situation as restive and its employees to have become the notorious shirkers," says Altaf Ahmad, a business man based in Srinagar.
Parents of scores of children whose wards study outside Valley were seen up in arms against the JK Bank against such attitude of JK bank employees. They said almost all bank branches continue to function for brief hours in morning, making people suffer. "My ATM card is blocked since past month. I could not unblock it as the bank remains closed for the entire day. The only time it is open during the wee hours of morning," says Umar Manzoor, a civil servant.
Furthermore, to check the authenticity of the peoples' claims, this correspondent travelled to several areas of Srinagar city and its outskirts. It was found that all the bank branches in the areas were locked. It was informed by the people residing nearby the branches that the bank employees are much reluctant to resume their duties in a routine coarse "They (bank employees) fear that miscreants could attack the bank and thrash them. They prefer to come early in the morning and leave after two hours," says a shopkeeper residing near one of the JK bank branches in Srinagar.
