Death toll in Kashmir violence reaches 88 as injured youth succumbs at hospital | | | Jehangir Rashid
SRINAGAR, Oct 1: The death toll in Kashmir violence reached 88 today as a youth belonging to Central Kashmir's Budgam district succumbed to his injuries. At the same time protests were reported from some areas, but the situation remained by and large normal. Muzaffar Ahmad Pandit, son of Mohammad Ramzan, a resident of Check-i-Kawoosa area succumbed to his injures at the Sher-I-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Soura here. Muzaffar has sustained injuries after being hit by pellets during protests on September 14. He was operated upon by doctors in his left eye several times. However, he could not recover from Sepsis. Reports said that Muzaffar developed complications on Friday night and was rushed to SDH Magam where from he was referred to SKIMS for treatment where he breathed his last. Thousands of people attended his funeral prayers. He was laid to rest in the graveyard at his native Check-e-Kawoosa village. At the same time clashes erupted between youth and security forces in the Maisuma area in the summer capital of Srinagar. Security forces used tear gas canisters to disperse the protesting youth. Clashes were also reported from several areas of old city during the late evening hours during which security forces dispersed youth by resorting to tear gas shelling in the areas. A complete shutdown was observed across the valley on the 85th straight day today. All the educational institutions, petrol pumps, business establishments and other offices remained closed throughout the day. Uptown areas like Lal Chowk, Rajbagh, Jawahar Nagar, Dalgate and Sanat Nagar continued to witness a considerable movement of private transport today. Meanwhile, according to a statement issued by the Zonal Police Headquarters Kashmir, the situation across the valley remained by and large peaceful today. "There was no curfew in any part of the valley," it said. According to the statement during the day no untoward incident was reported from any part of the valley. "There was greater movement of people and vehicular traffic observed in Srinagar city as also in other parts of the valley," it said. The statement said that to curb the activities of trouble mongers police arrested 51 such individuals involved in various offences of creating disturbances in different part of the valley. It would be in place to mention here that Kashmir valley has been on boil since the evening of July 8 after Hizbul Mujahideen Commander; Burhan Muzaffar Wani was killed along with his two associates in an encounter with security forces at Bemdoora-Kokernag in Anantnag district. The street protests that followed Burhan's killing has so far claimed lives of 88 persons. |
