Rickshaws disappear from Srinagar roads | Torching of autos scares drivers | | Majid Nabi Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Oct 5: A day after two auto-rickshaws were set ablaze by unidentified persons in old city, the moment of auto-rickshaw's which otherwise ply in extreme situations remained considerably thin in Srinagar city on Wednesday. Fearing attack by miscreants most of the auto-rickshaws in summer capital refrained to ply today while skeletal movement was witnessed in some uptown localities. Pertinently, two auto-rickshaws were set ablaze in separate incidents at Bhagwanpora area of Kralakhud and Saida Kadal areas yesterday. It is worth mentioning that the transport industry in Kashmir has been seriously affected due to the ongoing turmoil triggered after the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen militant, Burhan Wani in an encounter with security forces on July 8. ''We have been labelled as paid gents of the government, but we want to clear that we too have right to live, we too have family burdens, how far is this genuine to treat us as agents," Fayaz an auto-rickshaw driver told 'Early Times'. He said that his fraternity has been tirelessly serving the people despite stringent curfew restrictions and shutdowns in the valley. "Public transport service was drastically affected during these months, but we kept ferrying people and patients in extremely challenging situations, how come a poor man who has burrowed loan to purchase auto will pay its instalments, he questioned. He claimed that auto drivers have been soft targets during current uprising. "How could they entertain movement of private vehicles on roads, we too are humans and should not be treated as untouchables," he said. Another driver Mohammad Sultan from Khanyar area said that he has been begging to feed his family as he has been left with no other option in such circumstances. "Do they want my children to die for want of food, I am not opposing strikes but how could I feed my family when I don't work," he added. He claimed that grudge against auto-rickshaw drivers is unjustified as they too have suffered the way others suffered in ongoing unrest in Kashmir valley. "The burning of auto-rickshaws is a cowardly act, I must not hesitate to say that people who commit the dastardly act are inhuman,'' he said. |
