Allows fruit laden trucks to move in night; Asks city dwellers to carry on with chalos, strikes | Geelani's calendar divides rural, urban Kashmir | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 5: The Hurriyat hawk Syed Ali Shah Geelani on Wednesday issued yet another protest calendar and extended shutdown till October 13. The protest calendars being issued by Geelani during the past few weeks have divided the urban and rural people as Geelani has exempted the vehicular movement from 10 pm to 6am. Sources said that Geelani has exempted the vehicular movement in the night to help the rural people, who these days are sending apple and other fruits to different states. "Geelani called for shutdown when the tourist season was at its peak and people in the urban areas, including Srinagar, were doing brisk business. He gave a damn to the tourist season which led to all the business and commercial activities coming to an abrupt halt," sources quoted city dwellers as having said. They said, "By allowing the vehicular movement in the night Geelani is facilitating the movement of trucks. His instruction to stone-pelters and miscreants are clear that they should allow fruit laden trucks to ply." "After turning Srinagar city into graveyard Geelani is allowing the residents of rural areas to earn their livelihood without any difficulty. He adopting different yardsticks for rural an urban areas has exposed his double standards. Our shops, offices, schools, transport have been closed for the past three months. Geelani is least bothered and is preaching resistance and Azadi," the city dwellers added. Sources told Early Times, " Geelani has exempted the vehicular movement during night to keep the activists of Jamaat-e-Islami in good books as Jamaatis are his supporters. He knows city people don't support him and don't believe in his ideology. Since the day unrest has broken out people in Srinagar have made desperate attempts to break the shutdown and have defied Geelani's call. Government putting Hurriyat dove Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and so-called chief of JKLF Yasin Malik behind the bars has led to city remaining calm to a great extent. Only those city areas have witnessed protests and clashes where Jamaatis are active and are in good number." Insiders revealed that at present people have been divided into two groups. "One group is opposing separatists tooth and nail while the other group, which comprises mostly of Jamaat cadres, is trying its best to foment trouble. Most Jamaatis from rural areas have sought 10-15 days time from Geelani to resume stone-pelting. They have told Geelani that as soon as the harvest season would get over they would again come on streets," they added. A Kashmir watcher said, "Present unrest has exposed Geelani and his company as people have realized that separatists are not their well wishers. They have observed that a few paid agents of separatists have brought the life to a grinding halt. The government announcing compensation for the two auto drivers whose autos were set ablaze by miscreants in Srinagar's old city on Tuesday can lead to more people coming out of their homes to break the siege and end Geelani's rule in Kashmir." |
