Government to allow 'united' Hurriyat meeting again | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 15: Learning no lessons from the consequences of granting freedom to separatists to move around during the ongoing unrest in the Valley, the government is likely to allow the 'united' Hurriyat to hold another meeting on issuance of protest calendar in the coming days. Sources said JKLF chairman Yasin Malik who was arrested last week after the meeting of the 'united' Hurriyat with 'stakeholders' decided to continue with the protest calendar, was released in Srinagar on Tuesday evening. Insiders said Malik would call on Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani at his Hyderpora residence soon to decide on the next protest calendar, which is scheduled to be released on Wednesday. While the government is hopeful that there would be a breakthrough, security analysts have kept their fingers crossed. Malik has been released at a time when the situation has considerably improved in the Valley. While private and public transport has been plying normal, shops also remain open in most of the areas. On November 8, when the 'united' Hurriyat called a meeting with the "stakeholders" to decide future course of action on protest calendar, the government was hopeful of restoration of normalcy. But the hopes shattered the same evening when the separatists announced that the "people want them to continue with the agitation." Apart from Geelani and Malik, their Hurriyat (M) counterpart Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was also present at the meeting. The next day while Malik was arrested and sent to central jail Srinagar, Mirwaiz was placed under house arrest at his Nigeen residence. The same day, coalition government partner BJP disassociated itself from the government decision of allowing the separatist leaders to meet and decide on protest calendar. The meeting of the Hurriyat leaders had unnerved opposition National Conference, with its spokesman saying that government had gone for a "deal" with the separatists over situation in Kashmir. The NC reaction had come in the wake of statement made by Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti on November 7 here that she was expecting "good news" in Kashmir next week. While the separatists have been trying hard to keep the pot boiling in Kashmir, the people have started open defiance of the hartal calendar. The smooth conduct of board exams is being seen as another defeat of the separatist forces in the Valley. |
