On BJP workers' complaint, BLW punished for honesty

Early Times Report

rajouri, Nov 15: A Gram Sevak working in Sunderbani here has been transferred within two months of his posting, only because his presence was hindering corruption.
In August this year Happy Raina, a Gram Sevak or Block Level Worker (BLW) was transferred to Sunderbani for execution of works under the MNREGA. While the villagers were satisfied with his work, his honesty proved an eyesore for the BJP workers who are already under scanner for bungling in the execution of MNREGA projects in the area.
Sources said the BJP workers called on the Block Development Officer concerned asking him to "get rid of the man how was proving a hindrance in their nefarious designs."
Sources said the BDO instantly met their demand and transferred Happy. "He (Happy) had become an eyesore even for the BDO who was unable to get his share of commission due to his presence," said the insiders.
Officials said Happy's transfer was illegal as under norms he was supposed to work in the area for at least two and a half years. "30 months is the minimum prescribed stay for Gram Sevaks, whereas in this area people holding such charge have not been transferred for the past six to seven years. One wonders why this honest man was transferred so quickly," the officials said.
As the news of his "illegal" transfer spread, the Panchayat Nallah Makool called an emergency with Sarpanch Teerath Ram in chair. Taking a serious note of the transfer, the Sarpanch threatened to stage protests should the BDO fail to revoke the transfer orders.
"We will block the highway if this government fails to revoke the transfer orders of Happy Ji whose working has been most satisfactory in the area. How can a person be punished for his honesty and efficiency? Or is it that the government wants to keep doors or corruption open?" the Sarpanch flanked by over 200 respectable villagers told Early Times.
A senior official of the Rural Development Department said strict action would be taken against the BDO if the Gram Sevak has been transferred within such a short span of time. "We will look into the matter and if this complaint is true we will initiate strict actions against the BDO," the official said.
