Jammu, Nov 15: Exposing government's so-called drive against forestland encroachers, another BJP leader has encroached upon several kanals of land in Sunjwan area and started construction work on it.
After reshuffle in portfolio under Chief Ministership of Mehbooba Mufti, the Forest Department has turned a blind eye towards encroachment on forestland in the state.
In the last incident, the encroacher belongs to coalition partner BJP. The Forest Department, sources said, has given a free hand to the influential leader to start construction.
The anti-encroachment drive came in force during previous Former Minister Bali Bhagat's tenure, and thousands of kanal of encroached forestland was retrieved during the drive.
"But the change of guard after former Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed's death proved golden opportunity for encroachers, and they begun construction on illegally grabbed land. A land mafia and several BJP leaders are eyeing forest and government land along outskirts of Jammu city", sources said. They said the BJP leader in question had encroached upon a major portion of forestland in Sunjwan a year ago back is now raising structure on it.
"The matter came into the light last year, when the BJP leader started construction, but after media highlighted it, the work was put on hold for some time," sources said.
They said the leader has grabbed around two dozen kanals of land in Sunjwan and is planning to execute a major project in the area. "The land grabber's affiliation with BJP kept anti-encroachment agencies away from the site. The BJP leader has also close proximity with a powerful minister from the BJP", sources said and added that the BJP leader had played an important role when the minister confronted with the Gujjar community in past.
Sources said not only the BJP leader but even many ministers have encroached forestland in Sunjwan and other areas of Jammu city and raised structures there. |
