Rail service between Srinagar-Baramulla resumes | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Dec 6 : Rail service between Srinagar-Badgam in the central Kashmir and Baramulla in north resumed today after remaining suspended yesterday due to some damage caused to railway track in Pattan area. Meanwhile, a fortnightly train service for children would chug from December 11 between Banihal in Jammu region and Baramulla in north. Rail run resumed and the first train left at 0830 hrs this morning from Nowgam station of Srinagar for Baramulla, a railway official told He said the rail service was suspended yesterday due to some damage caused to track at Pattan. Train from Baramulla was stopped at Pattan, where some hooks were found damaged. Similarly train from Srinagar-Badgam to Baramulla was also suspended. Official sources, however, told that track hooks were missing at Pattan, where security forces burst teargas shells and resorted to lathicharge to disperse demonstrators who were protesting against night raids on some houses at Palhallan on December 4. ''We cannot say if this is a theft case or deliberately done by demonstrators to disrupt rail traffic,'' they said. Rail service between Baramulla in north to Badgam and Srinagar in central Kashmir and Anantnag and Qazigund in south Kashmir to Banihal in Jammu region remained suspended for more than four months due to unrest in the Kashmir valley during which rail track and other property was damaged. However, the rail run was resumed last week after conducting repair work. The railways has suffered more than Rs 4.5 crore loss during the unrest when train service remained suspended. A fortnightly train service for children would chug from December 11 between Banihal in Jammu region and Baramulla in north Kashmir for which arrangements were finalised yesterday in a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti. The meeting, attended by among others by Minister for Education Naeem Akhtar, deliberated on the logistic arrangements and other issues for running of the train service. The decision to start a fortnightly train service exclusively for children was taken in a meeting the Chief Minister had with Minister for Railways, Suresh Prabhu at New Delhi last week wherein she had requested for starting such a train service in view of the limited outing facilities available to kids in the Valley. Officials said the train would take off from Banihal every alternate Sunday from December 11 at 0815 hrs and reach Baramulla at 1040 hrs from where it would return back at 1050 hrs to reach Banihal back at 1335 hrs. The train would again move from Banihal at 1410 hrs and reach Baramulla at 1705 hrs to finally return back at 1715 hrs for the day, the meeting was informed. The meeting decided to nominate nodal officers from Education Department in every district besides a Nodal Officer from the Directorate of Education to maintain close liaison with Railway authorities. The Chief Minister impressed upon the Education Department and Railway authorities to coordinate with each other to further fine-tune the arrangements for the proposed ride. Mehbooba said the children of the Valley have generally limited facilities of outing available and such a facility would give them an opportunity to know their province and State much closely and mingle with children of other areas and districts. Starting from Banihal, the train would have stops at Qazigund, Anantnag, Awantipora, Srinagar, Budgam and Sopore before reaching Baramulla. In the first instance, students from Government run schools would be taken on the train ride but subsequently the facility would be thrown open to children of private schools as well. On the occasion, the Chief Minister was informed by the Railway authorities that so far half of the railway services have been resumed on the Banihal-Baramulla track and the other half would also be resumed soon. |
