GAD sits over files seeking prosecution of tainted govt officials | | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Dec 6: The state government's claim of acting against corrupt officials falls flat every now and then as an important department is not taking up the issue seriously thus mocking at the whole process. Sources told Early Times that General Administration Department (GAD) is sitting over many of the files seeking prosecution of government officials whose guilt has already been established in various corruption cases. The GAD has been resorting to inordinate delay in prosecuting such officials and as such the corrupt continue to make merry. "The axe has always fallen on lower rung officials with the top notch officials managing to get away scott free. The GAD has been very inactive in prosecuting the corrupt officials. As such the other tainted officials have been emboldened to carry forward the corrupt practices in the different departments in the state," said sources. Sources said that despite promise to act against corrupt officials the present Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) dispensation has failed to keep its word in this regard. They said that failure of the government to act against corrupt has given an impression that many a slip between cup and lip when it comes to acting against the tainted government personnel especially the officers. "It seems that the state government has virtually surrendered before the corrupt officials with very little action taken against top ranking government officers. Over the past couple of years hardly any action has been taken against corrupt officials. The present government is no different from its previous dispensation when it comes to acting against tainted officials," said sources. It would be in place to mention here that immediately after assuming power the PDP-BJP coalition government reinstated some of the government officers who were found involved in corrupt practices. These corrupt officers were given plum postings and they continue to indulge in corrupt practices at their new places of posting. "Lower rung officials like Patwaris, constables and clerks have become scapegoats in the present government's so called crusade against corruption in the state. Officials occupying higher position in the various departments despite being indicted in corruption cases have so far managed to run away. This speaks volumes about government's inaction to act tough against the top ranking corrupt officials of Jammu & Kashmir," said sources. Pertinently, the state government had come out with a list of 'deadwood' officials in July last year with the promise that subsequent such lists would be made public with the passage of time. Although, a year and a half has passed since then, no second list of 'deadwood' officers and officials has been issued by the people at helm. The delay in making public such a list has led to emboldening of corrupt officers and officials in the state. |
