Tourist resorts on sale | Govt mulls to lease out land to 'influential families' | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Dec 6: In what could turn out to be another land scam, the state government is contemplating to lease out state land at some prime tourist resorts across the state to some influential families in the garb of Public-Private Partnership (PPP) to develop tourist infrastructure. "PPP is merely an eyewash, the actual plan is to bless their nears and dears, with natural beauty of Jammu and Kashmir," said a source in know of the matter. He said the "influential families" have been asked to submit proposal for "PPP mode use of land at prime locations." Sources said some senior officials were being empowered to lease out the resources on PPP basis. Sources said at least three ministers and their associates from the business fraternity in Kashmir have already started lobbying for allotment of land. "Apart from construction of hotels, they plan to raise model villages in some virgin areas," the sources said. Sources said the "influential families" and other business groups are willing to show investment of over Rs 50 crores each for development of infrastructure at these locations. Not only prime locations in Kashmir, some picturesque places in Jammu and Doda regions may also go up for grabs. While the government has already been leasing out its resources like clubs and huts to private players, this time new infrastructure is likely to be developed out of the PPP mode. A senior official, who has already worked with Tourism department, said unless the government defines modalities of the PPP mode, leasing out resources on mere agreement will be sellout of our resources. "There needs to be a defined policy, unless that happens only influential will get benefitted," the official told Early Times. When contacted the Tourism department officials downplayed the matter. "As of now there's no such plan. Whenever any such development takes place it will be duly publicized. Nothing will be swept under the carpet," the official said. |
