Critics ask party leaders, activists to choose between Azadi, India | Farooq puts NC in tight spot | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Dec 6: The statement of former JK chief minister and National Conference patron Dr Farooq Abdullah that NC supports Hurriyat and Azadi has put the credibility of his party leaders at stake. Sources told Early Times that Dr Farooq owing allegiance to separatists and supporting the so-called movement for Azadi has put the nationalist NC leaders from Jammu region and a few from Kashmir Valley in a tight spot. They have been left dumbfounded and don't know how to react to the development. "NC patron toeing the line of separatists has put the question mark on the loyalty of nationalist NC leaders. A few of them are contemplating to call it quits as they believe that they cannot remain affiliated with the party which supports sedition and separatism," said a source. He said, "A few NC leaders in Kashmir believe that Dr Farooq Abdullah by opening his mouth has put the grass root NC workers in trouble. Now Police and other security agencies can easily pick any NC worker for questioning and book him under Public Safety Act on the charges of stone pelting. Dr Farooq Abdullah's statement has made NC leaders and activists vulnerable." Interestingly, the day after Dr Farooq Abdullah asked the NC workers to support Hurriyat, miscreants surfaced at many places across the city. They miscreants resorted to stone pelting, arson, and damaged many vehicles, which were plying on the roads. "Incidents of stone pelting were reported from the areas which are considered to be the stronghold of NC," said a source. A Kashmir watcher said, "By supporting so-called Azadi movement Dr Farooq Abdullah has put the career of NC leaders at stake. Besides NC leaders, now NC workers will too have to face the brunt." The Kashmir based spokesman of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Khalid Jehangir while reacting to Dr Farooq Abdullah's statement said, "If he is really interested in so-called Azadi and the movement then he should give up his Z-security cover, quit mainstream politics and join the separatist camp." He said, "Government should ask the security agencies and Police to probe the role of NC leaders in the ongoing unrest. Dr Farooq Abdullah's statement indicates that NC has played a major role in pushing Kashmir towards the edge." He said, "If any of the NC leaders are found involved in sponsoring anti-India protests and the Halla-Gulla, which Kashmir witnessed during the past five months, should be booked and dealt according to the law of the land." An analyst said that after supporting separatists and so-called "movement for Azadi" Dr Farooq should ask the NC legislators to tender their resignations and give up the privileges they are enjoying. "NC leaders from both Jammu and Kashmir regions should make their position clear whether they are with India or against it. They cannot sail on two boats. They have to choose between Azadi and India." |
