Possibilities for Congress to form grand alliance in UP dim
12/7/2016 12:25:20 AM
For the time being the prospects of an alliance between
the ruling Samajwadi Party and the Congress for the ensuing Assembly in Uttar Pradesh seem to be dim.Even the SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav has ruled out any alliance with any part for the purpose of fighting the election. Yes the doors of the SP are open if any party decides to merge with it.As far as the merger is concerned Congress the main opposition in the country and the oldest party, that has tasted power for about 15 year in the centre,is in no mood to merge with the SP. For the Congress SP is a regional party though it has some bases in other states and against this the Congress is a national party. If there is any question of merger let the SP merge with the congress Amidst indications that SP leader and Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav is warming up to the idea of an alliance with Congress, UP PCC President Raj Babbar Monday said his party will contest alone in the state and described such talks as "hypothetical".
Alliance talks in some way demoralises workers. I have no such information. The party leadership has not asked me to look for a tie up and it's not under consideration. This is hypothetical," he said in an interview. Recently Akhilesh had said that his party was capable enough to get majority on its own but if there was an alliance with Congress, they would together get over 300 seats, trigrring speculation of a pre-poll tieup.Akhilesh's father and SP patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav has already ruled out any pre-poll alliance, asserting that there can only be mergers. The Chief Minister, however, had said that a final decision on the alliance will be taken by the SP supremo and he can only give suggestions. Akhilesh also suggested that Congress will have to accept that it may have to fight on a fewer number of seats than it wants in an alliance because a tie-up will not work out if it keeps thinking about "profit and loss".
Though the Congress was not in a mood to forge an alliance with the SP as it has contributed to the formation of a grand alliance in Bihar allowing the JD(U) to win the poll thereby defeating the BJP.No doubt the Congress is keen to defeat the BJP in the UP elections it is not prepared to join hands with a party, SP, which has been a discredited because of deteriorating law and order situation and on account of loot and murders and kidnapping. In other crimes, that include communal riots, rapes, and abductions UP tops the list of the states.Hence the Congress does not want to earn the displeasure of people by joing hands with a party like the SP. This way the pre-poll analysts keep their fingers crossed because the ensuing election is going to be a multi-party contest. You have SP on one side, from those that challenge it include the BJP,the Congress and BSP.Initial survey indicates that when alliances fail to hammer out a grand alliance the UP election results may be a fractured one.
