Govt may restore 4G internet on April 3 | Decision likely after review meeting on internet gag on Friday | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 31: The Jammu and Kashmir government may lift the internet gag on 4G services from April 3 onwards in view of the prevalent COVID 19 threat looming large across the Union territory. As per the reports, the Jammu and Kashmir is likely to lift the ban on 4G services on April 3 which will allow millions of mobile subscribers across Jammu and Kashmir to use the high speed mobile internet sans any hinderance. On March 26, the Jammu and Kashmir administration ordered the continuance of 2G mobile data services in the union territory till April 3 even as there has been a growing demand for restoration of high-speed 4G internet in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. Principal Secretary, Home Department, Shaleen Kabra said the internet speed on mobile phones will be restricted to 2G only. Postpaid sim card holders shall be provided with access to the internet. However, such access shall not be made available on prepaid sim cards unless verified as per the norms applicable for postpaid connections, an order issued by the home department had said. It further added that fixed line internet connectivity with mac-binding shall be available, it added. The order stated the directions shall be effective immediately and remain in force up to April 3. However, as mere three days later the order is being reviewed, there are high chances, as per the reports that the 4 G services will be restored across Jammu and Kashmir. Such a measure as per the reports, is being taken to help people avail maximum awareness about the prevalent Coronavirus threat and will also help the medicos to attend the online sessions. The COVID-19 cases have soared in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir with new six cases reported from Kashmir division on Tuesday afternoon, taking the total toll to 55 in Jammu and Kashmir.“6 new positive cases confirmed in Kashmir Division. All contacts of previous positive cases. Meanwhile contact tracing continues in both Jammu and Kashmir Divisions. Please cooperate,” tweeted J&K government spokesman Rohit Kansal. Pertinently with two deaths, both from Srinagar and two recoveries one each from Kashmir and Jammu, the total no of positive cases so far is 55 with active 51. Several political parties including the National Conference, the CPI(M), the BJP and the Congress has batted strongly for restoration of 4G mobile internet services in Jammu and Kashmir to help people to deal with an unprecedented situation that has arisen in the wake of the coronavirus. |
