With darbaar return traffic jams to inconvenience people | | | Shakeel A Khan
SRINAGAR, May 8: The move offices which resumed business here in the summer capital on May 5 have subjected the people to severe inconvenience on account of frequent traffic jams. The government's poor traffic management policy has only brought miseries to the commoners. With the opening of the move offices at Srinagar, the lives of the people have become a hell. The journey in vehicles has become a painful exercise for the commoners, more so for the ones who heavily rely on the public transport system. One can see the heart moving scenes during the traffic jams as the ambulances ferrying patients get stuck in the traffic jams. Even the cries of the patients in these ambulances are lost on the air as they fail to catch the attention of the authorities. "Poor performance has exposed the traffic department as it has failed to put in place an effective mechanism to regulate the traffic about which the department claims tall, but on the ground it is a distant dream," said Ibrahim Khan from Srinagar. One can see thousands of vehicles stranded on the roads leading to Srinagar, carrying a lot of people, from businessmen to labourers. Their journey of minutes takes hours along hence spoiling their time and efforts. Patients feel more heat of this mismanagement. The persons associated with the regulation of the traffic are seen on their toes whenever they sense the movement of the vehicles carrying ministers, MLAs and bureaucrats. These vehicles are given priorities to facilitate their smooth movement otherwise very complex for the commoners."With no facilities of the stands in place, for big and small vehicles, adds to the problems. These vehicles pick and drop passengers at the crowded places with the vehicles in lock step hence aggravating the already existing painful situations," said Abdul Khaliq from Bemina. The pedestrian movement is not smooth though. This is not only because of the traffic mess but because of the fact as well that the makeshift shops have encroached upon the already existing narrow roads as they seemingly these shopkeepers enjoy the patronage of the municipal corporation. Some people while sharing their views with the early times said "The number of the registered vehicles has increased many folds and the 'Darbar move' doubles this number within no time. With marginal increase in the road infrastructure, the problems are aggravating constantly."They went on saying that the traffic mess is the horrible face of the Srinagar city due to the prevalent traffic & transportation system. According to them, Srinagar attracts a lot of regional traffic more so during the days when the secretariat is functional here. But to regulate this unprecedented rush there is no effective mechanism in place. |
