SRINAGAR, May 8: A Panch owing allegiance to National Conference was killed by suspected militants in the Wanpoh village of South Kashmir's Kulgam district today evening. Police has launched a manhunt to nab the suspected militants who carried out the attack.
Meanwhile, Police today retrieved the body of a militant from an orchard in Tral area of South Kashmir's Pulwama district. The militant was reportedly injured during an encounter with a joint party of police and Army during the night of May 6.
Reports reaching here said that some suspected militants barged in the shop of a Panch identified as Gul Mohammad Bhat at Wanpoh in Kulgam district in the evening at about 6:30 PM. The militants fired a volley of bullets on the Panch and left him in a pool of blood. The gunshots created panic in the area with people feeling scared.
Some of the shopkeepers and locals shifted the injured Panch to the nearby health centre where from he was shifted to Srinagar for treatment. However, on way near Awantipora the Panch succumbed to his injuries and died. His death sent shock waves among the family with a pall of gloom descending upon the entire Bhat family.
Aged 66 years, Gul Mohammad Bhat was associated with National Conference and was a staunch political worker. He got elected as a Panch during the Panchayat elections held in 2011. He was said to be close to the top notch leaders of National Conference and used to play active role for the party in the Kulgam district.
Following the incident police and CRPF cordoned off the entire Wanpoh market and carried out searches in order to trace out the militants who carried out the attack. However, the militants had left the place and as such no one could be traced out. The searches were going on when last reports came in.
National Conference spokesman, Junaid Azim Mattu while condemning the killing of Bhat said that Bhat was a political worker and activist who belonged to the National Conference. He termed the killing as an act of cowardice and barbarism.
Meanwhile, Police retrieved the body of a militant from an orchard in Tral. A police spokesman said that the militant was injured during an encounter with police and Army on May 6.
"On a tip off regarding movement of militants during the night hours Awantipora police and Army laid an ambush near Dadsara-Amirabad on May 6. Late in the evening, the ambush team reported some movement. The team asked them to stop and reveal their identity but the militants retaliated with heavy fire leading to an encounter," said the police spokesman.
The spokesman said that militants while taking advantage of darkness and vegetation managed to escape. He said the ambush team detected blood stain marks on the trails of the fleeing militants. He added that next morning police recovered an AK 47 rifle near the encounter site believed to be that of the injured militant.
"Today police retrieved the body of the injured militant from an orchard at Panzoo, Tral. The slain militant has been identified as Syed Mawia a foreign militant of Jaish-e-Mohammad. He was one of the militants involved in the killing of Numbardar Mohammad Anwar at village Amlar, Tral," said the police spokesman.
In the meantime, a Defence spokesman said that a pistol, three magazines, 12 Chinese grenades, two binoculars, two compasses, three rounds of RPG, two 60mm bombs, one Wireless set and other administrative stores were recovered from the Hafruda forests in Kupwara district.
