Democracy has won and anarchy lost | Result of Six Lok Sabha seats in J&K? | | ET Report JAMMU, May 8: People of Jammu and Kashmir have already voted for all the six Parliamentary seats and it is not advisable to announce any exit poll on who won and by how much during these elections. That is against the directives of the Election Commission of India. Reflecting within the limitations imposed by the Election Commission, one can only wonder how to express one's views on victories and defeats in these elections. Without any fear of violating the directives of the Election Commission of India that needs to be complimented for carrying out the largest democratic process of elections in the world, what can be safely said is what have been issues over which the people would have deliberated before they pressed the button of their choice. If anyone thinks corruption, misgovernance, arrogance, patronizing stooges and shouting at the common man have not been the driving issues during these elections, he/she is living in fool's paradise (hope the reader gets who is living in the fool's paradise). If thinking that the people are doomed because they have no choice other than supporting status quo is the basis on which contestants would be handpicked by the voters, then nothing could be more arrogantly ignorant than that. People in the Jammu Lok Sabha seat have voted for what they most vocally said was for change. In Udhampur also majority of voters said they were voting for change. Change for the better and change from bad, is that what the voters in these two constituencies said? Well, everyone heard then say so. In the Two Lok Sabha seats there was a definite over current which could not be missed even by those who prefer to overlook realities. The message seemed to be clear despite a very low voter turnout in Anantnag, Srinagar and Baramulla Lok Sabha seats. Separatists tried their best to ensure that people stayed indoors. Majority of people have not come out to vote in the three seats of Srinagar, Anantnag and Baramulla. They preferred to stay indoors. Why? That is a matter of debate which the intelligence agencies and the mainstream political parties will have to find quick answers to. Despite the majority of voters staying away from the polling booths, the fact is that democracy is only about those who choose to vote and not those who prefer not to. The fact that nobody pushed, nudged or forced the non-voters to the polling booths is a great victory for the country's democracy, its institutions including the police, the paramilitary forces and the civil administration. Victors are already celebrating and those who have been shown the door are already looking at each other with tears of farewell in their eyes. Winners and losers apart, what has come out as the most resounding victory in the elections to the six Parliamentary seats in Jammu and Kashmir is India and its democracy. This is a fact the separatists will take a lifetime to deny because that is what they survive on, but even they cannot ignore it. |
