Central Library out of my Jurisdiction: DSW | JU makes hollow promises on Girl safety | | Shiv Thakur JAMMU, May 8: Even as the University of Jammu aimed at making the campus atmosphere conducive for study, free from ragging and safe for girl students, incidents of eve-teasing and molestation continue to taint the varsity. It is not the first time that a girl student of the university had to face such threats as similar incidents are quite prevalent in the different campuses. Earlier, some boys had misbehaved with girl students. But none of the culprits were brought to book. Despite the university administration promising to take stern measures to ensure that such incidents are not repeated, the promises proved to be hollow. A Research Scholar student was mistreated and abused by some boys in the Comrade Dhanvantri Central Library in University campus. The girl filed a complaint against the miscreants with the Registrar, who have started an investigation. With the incident, campuses of the university continue to be unsafe for girl students. The university administration is seemingly negligent in ensuring a safe atmosphere for the girl students, despite constant incidents that happened in past. According to the girl, who is Research scholar in Sociology department of the university's campus, she went to central library with one of her friends after the classes. "The boys, who were sitting there in the library, intercepted her in an obscene gestures and started shouting at her in an abusive language," the girl said, adding that the boys had written their names along with a warning to sit at own risk on some tables in the central library. The victim girl then rued that on complaining Prof PK Srivastava (Dean Student Welfare) about the incident, the Dean refused to do anything in this regard saying," Central Library is out of my Jurisdiction, so Icannot help you for this". The girl and her friend then approached the Registrar Office and briefed the whole matter with Registrar who then constituted a three member Committee headed by Prof. Neeru Sharma to ensure safety of the girl students and also ensured that those responsible for the incident would not be spared and will be dealed with Strictness. |
